This is a beautiful new building, a tiny tranquil architectural gem tucked away between the Royal Mile and Holyrood Road. It's the perfect place to hide for half an hour, to pull out a book at random from the shelves and curl up in a leather armchair with whoever has found their way into your lap - Sorley MacLean, Don Paterson, Edwin Morgan, or a voice from somewhere further away. There are volumes of work from the international poetry community, and upstairs there are tables where you can spread out the latest magazines with new work from Scotland and around the world. Last time I went there, there was some kind of woodland theme going on, and great jars of woodland flowers blooming among the books. It's a magical place. If you're into architecture, you might like to know that the building was designed by Malcolm Fraser and was shortlisted for Channel 4's Building of the Year.
