Had a pint in here before going to a restaurant next door.
Friendly staff and a decent pint, nice interior, though could probably do with a bit of freshening up.
Was quiet but was early and seemed like a decent mix of students and regulars.
Definately one of the better pubs in the area.
Ask any Edinburgh local- Curl up on the big comfy sofas with a bottle of wine and wait for them to pull down the projector screen…
Had high hopes for this pub but the attitude of the staff put me right off and I won't be back. Snotty, arrogant and extremely unfriendly - not to mention over priced. Don't bother.
Used to be an awesome (if slightly expensive) pub, offering something different to the cut-and-paste offers of so many other places - but that was before the management, in their infinite wisdom, took away the thing that made it special...
The pub used to have a back room which was essentially a huge sofa to chill out on. Take off your shoes, lie back, and drink. The place showed cult films in there every afternoon too, though I never experienced this aspect of the pub myself. Whether they still show films or not is irrelevant, since the one brilliant unique thing about the Brass Monkey has now gone - the sofas!
There's actually a protest group on Facebook about this bizarre move. It's turned the pub from a nice little venue to a bland one, and if they never bring back the place's good old ways, I'll keep going to Under The Stairs instead for a drink.
We went for a pint here last night, It wasn't very busy when we went although it was early.
We sat in the viewing room with the big bed in it, Very nice and relaxed. Will be going here again for more beers.
They also show cult films everyday at 3pm. Overall, Great Pub.
As a newbie to Edinburgh I’m always on the look-out for good pubs and with the Brass Monkey I found one. This place is small but full of character and when I was there last Saturday night it had a great atmosphere. The clientele was a mixed bag with trendy-student types as well as a more casual, older crowd; the good thing about the Brass Monkey is you can turn up in jeans and a jumper or be wearing your gladrags and not feel out of place. For a pub, the music was a bit too loud for my liking (one does not like to shout over a pint) however, the character and atmosphere will make me return again. And again.
Definitely one of my favourite pubs! I was taken there by my first hosts in a backpacker's hostel on Dublin St, we had our first Tenant beers there before heading towards the Grassmarket area. It is a tiny pub with character, a big bed and a screen. It is always crowded and merry there, the choice of drinks at the bar is fantastic and the prices are average.
The famous Brass Monkey is hidden away just off South Bridge, and is worth looking out for. This is a pub with true character. Relax with your friends on your choice of barstool, sofa or double bed - just remember to take your shoes off first, please!
This is my favourite pub in Edinburgh largely on account of the large bed in one of its rooms. There's lots of pillows and little specially designed tables with little drink holders. You can take of your shoes and relax and it is a great place for a lazy gathering with your friends. The interiors are amazing in this room film posters, often with monkey-style twists (12 'brass monkeys). For some reason it reminds me of opium den pictures. People laid back getting steadily intoxicated. It also helps that the music is usually pretty awesome. The drinks are alright although I am pretty much in love with the fact they offer cocktails. My favourite cocktail there are the Strawberry Daiquiris - very yummy.
The other excellent thing about this bar is that the room with the 'bed' also doubles as a screening room and films are shown daily at about 2pm (you often get to choose if you buy a round of drinks) You can also buy rather cheap lunches at this bar with soup, sandwiches and muffins on offer. I've personally never tried food here yet but maybe I should.
I think the only reason I can not give this place 5 stars is that is rather small. This can be a problem when it is busy. It's quite sad when you can't get some room on the giant bed.
Was here during a weekday night, and as soon as I walked in I felt the how cosy this great wee pub was.
The main attraction of The Brass Monkey is the back lounge area. A huge bed takes up most of the room replacing seats, cushions scattered around it, and adds that homely and cosy feel which makes you feel very comfortable in the bar.
The Brass Monkey can get a little crowded due to it’s popularity clashing with small-ish size, but if you can find a decent spot for your night then you’re always guaranteed to have a grand night here.
Prices are reasonable, nothing too over-priced and bar staff, a bit lacking in charm, are a bit soulless but can be put up with.
A great wee pub, and a must-go!
Popped into the Brass Monkey before going to a show at the Festival Theatre around the corner. The pub appeared to be a friendly little placed with a mixed clientle. On entering it does look a bit dark, dingey and tired, but I was of the opinion that this was the atmosphere that they were trying to create. It certainly slightly different from a lot of other pubs in Edinburgh.
love love love this place. perfect wee pub for those catch-up pints, lazy afternoons, and hey, lazy evenings.
relaxed, comfortable, smiles all round.
the cinema room is unique, though does make me feel snoozy.
it’s just pure magic.
I love the Brass Monkey, yes it’s grubby, yes it’s a tad grimey, yes it’s full of students (sorry) but I’ve been hard pushed to find a bar with a better atmosphere in the city!
An absolute local gem (+ the bed and cinema adds to the charm!)

Love Brass Monkey- it’s a bit small, a bit grotty, it has a massive bed, cheap drinks, shows movies, was better pre smoking ban but it’s not their fault; i love it. Good bar staff too.
An opporunity to drink with a large number of students in a large manky bed. Can be a a little crowded at terms so a space is not guaranteed. Highlight of the trip was a woman coming in selling pies, if this happens every night, would easily get another two stars.
this place gets my vote every time. what could be cooler than somewhere which combines a bed and beer?
A very funky little bar. Formerly a serious student haunt it seems far more civilised these days. Average drinks, average prices, and average service Brass Monkey is, of course, saved by its giant “bed” out the back. Usually far too warm, a little smelly, and too busy it is, nonetheless, a very cool place to catch up with mates. Don’t think about what may have been spilt where you’re sitting.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering why the midget tables on the bed have lots of holes in they’re TO PUT YOUR PINT IN. Carefully balanced drinks on a giant bed aren’t a good mix so have a think the next time you sit down!
Really great bar just of Nicholson Street. Busy but there is a little gem hidden in the back - a room that is basically one big bed. Although a little smelly at times, it is so relaxing to sit in there with a pint and chat with mates. They play films (not sure of the times) but it’s a great place. Doesn’t seem to get too full of students despite it being in a student area. The staff are slightly cold, but nothing too bad. I love this bar.
Nice bar with a big room and a large screen on which they play films. If you ask nicely, they let you choose the film. reasonably priced drinks, but slightly cold service. Very much frequented by students, so expect a studenty feel to the place. Great for relaxing and watching a film in the afternoon!
If you want to be surrounded by shoeless students with frequently smelly feet who fall over you on thir way to the bar, htis is the place to be, personally, not my style, I prefer to walk on the floor and keep my shoes on when out in public!
