second time here a still very good.
This time I had the seafood platter for 1 fantastic and my wife had the trio of fish fillets off the specials board which came with a caper and samphire butter (To die for)
service is still first class
Not too sure about the bad reviews
think they’re a bit strange

My family and I love Whites and we go there frequently. The food is always delicious, hot & fresh. All the staff are fantastic and are always friendly. My children enjoy being there, equally love the food and the team includes them, chats to them and makes us all feel really welcome. It's our favourite place to go and we all look forward to going there! Highly recommend a visit.

This is the kind of place that would be just at home in Brighton. Gourmet fish and chips, steaks, seafood platters – stylish and a little bit pricey.
So, it’s slightly out of place in Hastings, but no the worse for it. Yes, you can get fish and chips cheaper elsewhere and it’ll probably be just as good, but if you want something that’s a little more stylish, or fancy something a little bit different, give it a shot.
UPDATED: We went back to White’s recently and while the starters were very good (loved the snails), the fish and chips weren’t as good this time around; my girlfriend’s fish was heavily battered in something quite soggy and, while very generous in portion size, the chips weren’t the gorgeous gastro chunky chips we had before. I did cast envious eyes on the fish platter, which I might have to try next time. No problem with the service: still good, and a nice atmosphere on a Saturday evening.

This is a relatively small restaurant in a prime location in George Street in the Old Town of Hastings.
Taking advantage of the fishing background the restaurant is a fish and steak restaurant (but has a number of other options Slow roast belly pork being a good example).
There are also a number of specials, to complement the relatively small menu, however the number of vegetarian options are very limited. In fact when we asked we were given vegetarian option that wasn’t even listed on the menu.
Overall the food was good and the portions are very decent (almost American is size).
The service does leave something to be desired, while it doesn’t advertise itself as silver service, you do expect a certain level of efficiency and manner, and while everyone was charming, it did leave a little to be desired and this is what lets the place down.
I would probably go there again on the strength of the food, but I would definitely check to see what else was available first.

First time to this little jem in the old town.
as we walked past we noticed the seafood counter in the front window
lots of local fish and shellfish.
I picked the seabass and my wife picked the plaice, as we sat there one of the chefs came out with tongs and a bowl and picked the fish from the counter.
A nice thing to see, and the meal was very good indeed.
Also the service was A1 very jolly staff.
A must.

Whites Bar, Seafood and Steak Restaurant, Old Town Hastings (Approx 4.9 miles from us.)
When researching establishments to recommend to our visitors this restaurant came out consistantly high in both food quality and value. It’s an ideal introduction to someone who wants to sample the very best seafood Hastings has to offer.
Do try it!

Have no idea why Qype removed my review!!! Hopefully wont be again; Went here for lunch and the food and service was fantastic. The ‘Fresh fish’ board all sounded so amazing had trouble choosing! In the end opted for the Seabass, which not only looked like a work of art it tasted great too. Will definately be eating here again soon!

Eaten at Whites twice this week! We all had lovely meals on both occasion’s. My seabass was gorgeous! The staff were great with my kids, even creating a dish of chocolate strawberries just to suit my child’s fussy needs! Thank you very much for great food & 2 great evenings during old town week!

Awful, badly cooked, poor quality food. Portions are small, oily, overcooked and tasteless. Snotty, patronising staff (one woman in particular, who i think was the owner, or maitre d’, she was dressed casually, had an odious attitude and pulled me up on my French pronunciation). One of the few restaurants where I refused to leave a tip. Notwithstanding that, it was £60 down the drain. If it weren’t for the ridiculous ‘pay as you go’ policy if you’re sitting outside, then I would’ve ran off without paying. Clearly several people had the same idea about this poxy place, which is why they have such a daft policy. Wish we’d had fish and chips instead.
This place, and its attitude thoroughly irritates me. Hastings is such a lovely little town, and places like this leave a nasty taste in the mouth of visitors. It takes advantage of its good location to draw people in then serves food surpassed in its sheer awfulness only by the attitude of the maitre d’. Have a look around and find a more deserving establishment for lunch or dinner.

I had a terrible experience here. The waitress was incredibly rude to me and my family, the food was OK. However VERY GREASY, I asked for a new plate of chips, to which she simply replied ’I’m sorry but nobody else is complaining’..customer service?!?!?! Will not go here again.

Worst steak I have ever had! I left two thirds of the steak, I could not physically chew it because it was so tough. To top it off when I mentioned the steak was inedible I was told that if I wanted a good quality steak I should have ordered Sirloin.
Rude and patronising people should not be running restaurants, I hope they go out of business.

Owner's commentAlex white, 27 July 2011:
This is a rather unfortunate version of the events that actually happened- I, as the owner talked to you about your meal after you commented (at the end of your meal-upon your plates being taken away) to one of my waiting staff that you didn’t like the quality of the steak. I made the decision to immediately talk to you-after first checking the steak that you had left on your plate- which was cooked perfectly and the amount that you left was extremely small and was in no way 2/3 of the total amount served. I pointed out to you that there was very little I could do to remedy the situation as you HAD eaten over 3/4 of the steak PLUS my waitress had come over to you approx 5 min’s after your meal was served to check that everything was Ok – at which point- you had cut into and eaten some of your steak- you were both happy with your meals at that point and as I personally observed the interaction between you and my staff member and there was no indication that there were any problems. When you complained I did say that steak is a natural product and that occasionally the quality can vary from animal to animal but that the quality should be consistant and I would take it up with our suppliers. I did not even mention ‘sirloin’ to you at any time or even suggest that you should have bought a ‘better’ cut of steak!!!. Also you fail to mention that as a gesture of goodwill I gave you a drink on the house- and offered you both coffees. (you declined the coffes but not 1/2 of lager) I would also like to point out that I did say to you that had you complained whilst eating your meal then we could, and would, have quite happily cooked you fresh steak or changed your meal all together.. At no point was I or my staff rude and patronising and I’m at a loss to understand what you would expect us to do when we had dealt with you and your partner in a professional and friendly manner and when you had eaten practically ALL the steak?!! In light of the actual conversation that took place I find your comments about us going out of business disingenuous and totally unnecessary.

A great example of a business owner trying to defend themselves, and unfortuanatly makes the business look even worse. As a business owner myself it is important to remember that the customer is always right – just a comment from from another user that is seeing the thread of comments etc.

There’s always two sides to a story and I can understand that a restaurant might want to defend itself if it finds itself under attack, especially if the reviewer is not telling the truth (I’m not saying that’s the case here; I wasn’t there at the time).
So, the customer isn’t always right and I think it’s fair for companies to have a right of reply. Perhaps the response could have been better worded (certainly less aggressive), but having been to Whites a couple of times and have family that have been regularly, it seems a bit odd.

Looked at the reviews for this restaurant on qype and trip adviser and i agree with the reviews on them.
This is the best restaurant in hastings byfar 5 out of 5 .
I had the seafood platter which was fantastic, had one at webbs in hastings which was a bit sad. (no match for the one at whites.)
Spoke to the Alex the owner a very nice guy and made me feel very welcome
My wife had the local plaice and the fresh mussels for a starter very good indeed
If your going to hastings or nearby then make a point of stopping off.

We went to Whites for our anniversary and we were NOT dissapointed. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff attentive and the slow roast pork was the best I'd ever had! We would DEFINITELY visit again and are going to book a table for my husband's birthday in July. A+++++

Everything about this restaurant is great, the food the staff the price.
moved to hastings old town 3 weeks ago and tried most of the other eating houses and this is top of our list.
They have a seafood counter in the front window so you can see before you buy.
They have a light lunch menu which runs along side there normal and specials board so there is lots to choose.
My last visit i had the crab platter, lots and lots of seafood to much for me to eat, my partner had the mussels as a starter and then the T bone steak as the main very good quality food
First class food, first class staff, just first class keep it up
