A nice slice of down to earth brum. Set on a canalside that are one of the cities biggest and most important historical features, the Tap and Spile stands as one of a kind amongst the rabble of new rnb/house clubs along Broad Street.

The last time I was in there Terry Nutkins (of The Really Wild Show fame) was having a drink with his young grandson jumping about! So you can inagine, a wholesome and interesting place. Traditional and full of character, the bottom level opens out on to the canal side, where you can step out for your ciggie.

Good ales and lagers. Relaxed atmospehere. A real pub! Once inside you could very easily forget you were just off Broad Street, which is generally a good thing!

Ah, the Tap & Spile... It is definitely the best pub in the area around Broad St., and probably the best pub in central Birmingham. Why is it so good? The atmosphere and the beer, mostly, that's why. They have a good selection of real ales (without being mind-blowing), but also a decent selection of lagers, and no, I don't mean Carling.

The top floor of the pub is at ground level at Gas St., and the lower floor is at ground level next to the canal, so the pub can be used as a handy through path from Broad St. down to the canal and the Mail Box. Inside the pub it's very old-fashioned with plenty of wooden furniture that looks like it's been there for a hundred years. The layout is very much of the cosy kind, with plenty of little nooks and crannies.

Both the clientelle and the barstaff are a mixture of ages from students through to pensioners, so everyone should feel welcome
