Review of Jabez Clegg Beer Hall from 9 June 2012
Jabez Clegg is normally associated with its well-renowned Friday night-out BOP. During the rest of the week, this is a slightly dingy cheerful student pub that offers alright food for the price and a range of alcohol for those thirsty students.

Regarding nights out, everyone at the Manchester universities knows about BOP. It's cheesy-music, drunken antics, dingy upstairs club, all adds to the experience of the night. You have to experience all the 18/19/20 year olds dancing along drunkenly to Barbie Girl by Aqua to fully understand the magic of BOP.

Review of Jabez Clegg Beer Hall from 3 February 2011

Unfortunate enuf to have had to go twice. First time round we went to wtch my mates band play upstairs in a room that looks like a kinda bdsm dungeon. downstairs looked nice enuf and i fancied a game of pool untill i learnt i had to pay a stupid deposit price for the white ball and another for the cues i understand that it is common practice in many city centre bars but, the staff were that lazy i didnt fancy standing at the bar for twenty minutes with cues and cue ball in hand waiting for them to aknowlegde me and give me my grans wedding ring back when id finished playing. the toilets were clean enough and i was rather impressed when i saw a member of staff actually wash his hands after using the facilities obviously lazy but clean. upstairs i had been drinking the cheapest supermarket bought lager in bottles on a buy one get one free basis however i was soon bored of sainsbury's own brand that i decided to go back down to the main bar and was impressed to see on tap, Kirin Ichiban so once the barstaff had stopped talking to eachother i excitedly ordered it. i must admit this pint could hav save jabez clegg for me, if a lot was riding on it if it was nice it would have been the best place in Manchester purely on its product selection esp as next to the kirin ichiban font stood a red stripe font. However as soon as i brought it to my lips i could smell it, and sharply demanded something else it was at this point i decided to go with the red stripe, however after one sip i realised it tasted more like american cream soda than the lovely jamacian fresh beer i was looking forward to. at this point i was just happy to drink something so i opted for a gin and tonic and thankfully they seemed to be able to manage this without killing me although fresh lime would have been nice. My second visit to jabez was short we met up with another of my mates bands before they played at the accademy. needless to say i advised my friends that the sainsburys own bottles were excellent and that maybe time was running away with us and that we should make our way up there as we dont want to miss sound check. we left after one bottle and then went to the accademy where the beer was .......... WORSE!

Jabez Clegg is a huge pub filled with students who can't face the student union bar or afford the prices at Kro.

It sells safe, basic food with little impact on your purse and the beer is... well... it's beer. There won't be a pint served in there that will make you jerk in astonishment.

But really, it's not that kind of haunt.

It's a no-frills, rough and ready night in which is soundtracked by chattering and, usually, football shown on the big screens.

Jabez also has gigs on now and again, sometimes branching out into all day festivals and the like, which is fun.

Rumour has it that The Bop has left the joint, which is staggeringly good news because really, that place was a fetid sick pot in the area, filled with dreary traffic light parties and people awkwardly hugging each other hoping that the other wouldn't lean in for the drunken neck kiss.

So yeah, if that's not there anymore, I'd suggest popping in for one.

This place is a bar/restaurant/nightclub. The bar bit ranks really well, as it has massive leather seats and large screens to watch sky sports. Its located in the middle of the University of Manchester, so for students its ideal to pop in and have lunch or drown your sorrows after completing your exams. This place serves huge burgers, guaranteed to fill you up. In the night, it is mainly used as a live venue for gigs and club. The nights that are run vary from metallic rock to karoake and jazz. The place is really massive and has a good number of rooms which you can rent out for a private party or meetings. Many university societies tend to hold their event here. Highly recommended for the food

Jabez Clegg is cheap and cheerful as per many student venues around the Oxford Road area. The Bop night seems to have disappeared now which is a shame, as it was a good cheesy night out. The bar on the ground floor is a nice enough area for a social drink and boasts a good range of drinks and student-pleasing prices. During the week it plays host to many unsigned band nights which is always a good thing to have around us, and the simple bar and upstairs rooms are all you need for such nights.
On the last weekend visit I had the bouncers had suddenly developed an attitude and its unlikely i’ll go back again.

This place gives off an air of a school disco, but it’s a firendly enough pub, definitely better suited to students and they have some decents dj’s on now and again!

Jabez Clegg is okay. It’s solid. It’s a bar of choice for many a student too lazy to venture further into the world but who doesn’t fancy the likes of Varsity. As a bar, it’s okay. The booths provide a bit of intimacy and the couches, which are almost always filled, are comfortable and cozy, particularly in winter.

The food is not bad either. It used to be great, but somehow, like Kro Bar, it has slowly deteriorated, so that the burgers really do taste pre-made rather than fresh to order. However, it is cheap and studenty, and you could definitely do worse.

Located in the midst of the university of manchester, this venue hosts a different number of nights. The play various music saturday night being the most popular with locals. It's a convenient place to pop in for a drink or lunch with friends. The food and drinks are relatively cheap and they have various rooms which can be hired out for private parties. Highly recommended.

The bar downstairs is comfortable and cosy. They show live football matches and also have a pool table. Upstairs there are two dance floors. The larger of the two reminds me very much of school disco's. It is a perfect rectangle with chairs pushed around the outside. The DJ is positioned in a box high above the dance floor, almost out of site. The other room is very small and is used purely to offer a second choice in music. Both areas have a bar. I went to Jabez Clegg on a popular student night called “The Bop” and being a student night I was expecting cheap drinks but found them to be pretty expensive. Having said all of this, the atmosphere is friendly and I did have a great night. However, I put it down to the company rather than the venue and I certainly won’t rush back.

Jabez Clegg - what to say? It's kinda rubbish, but it's a cheerful student pub. That's about it from me, really.
