We ate in the front of rebatos and thought it all was very cosy and inviting. The bar was very old school in the best way. waiters were very friendly etc

Having eaten a lot of tapas and i'd give the food 2 or 3 out of 5 which can seem a low score but i thought the
prawns were over cooked and didnt seem very fresh and were not brought "sizzling" to table , meatballs were ok but the sauce that they came in was needing a good kick of garlic n chilli in my opinion
calamari was a tad tougher than hoped for ...
i mean i have lived nearby for a few months and was keen to try this place for a while as id heard its one of the best tapas places in london bla bla
id go back for the surroundings but not the food really which is disappointing as id say if the chef raised his game it could be special ..
altho i did eat the lot ....
35 squid for 5 dishes and 2 softys was overpriced....

I had been wanting to try Rebatos for a while and finally went with a group of friends for my birthday. The service was amazing and the price reasonable- we pretty much ordered everything on the tapas menu. I heard that sitting in the bar is better but you can't book there so I was not sure how a table in the dining room would work out. It was lovely and light and the experience wasn't compromised at all from not being out front though that looks good as well and I will go back to try it. I won't say it was the best tapas I've ever eaten -I probably prefer nearby Estrella- but the staff made up for that in loveliness and for a bonus point there was a dessert trolly. As my friend pointed out- everywhere should have a desset trolly.

Review of Rebato's from 1 February 2010

Located at 169 South Lambeth Road (SW8 1XW), Rebato's is a well established restaurant with a friendly, local vibe. The instant Spanish holiday feel here is reason enough to visit. But if you need another, consider the gorgeous suckling pig's liver. However, you don't have to be a gluttonous carnivore to indulge here. There's a very impressive selection of veggie dishes.

If you're reading this review before the 15th of February 2010, you might be interested in giving the Viva el Vino menu a go (order the wine and the restaurant will surprise you with paired dishes). But any reason to go is a good one!

Had my first taste at Rebato’s recently and I loved it. Went for the Campo Viejo’s Viva el Vino campaign where you choose your wine, but don’t get to choose what you eat. The restaurant pairs the wine with a selection of food. It was nice being surprised. The food was excellent – everything from boquerones, pimientos do padron, chorizo, tortilla, squid, chuletas, and more. The Santiago sponge was delish too. The service was warm, friendly, unfussy and efficient. Will definitely be back!

Agreed. I love this place. It's a great spot for dinner on Sunday's too (surrounded by portuguese and spanish families!)

Oh I need to go back to Rebatos, I miss it (and their boquerones!)

Remember that MI6 Agent who got drunk and left his briefcase full of secrets in the Spanish restaurant in South London? This is the place.

Espionage aside, Rebato's is a cracking little Spanish restaurant in the heart of Stockwell. The staff are wonderfully friendly (as well as efficient) and i'm always warmly welcomed whenever i come here.

Recommended dishes - try the Huevos Flamenco (Chorizo, Ham, Tomato and Pimento), the Calamares a la Romano (Squid) or the Gambas al'ajillo (prawns sauted with garlic and chilli). All are excellent.

I'll be back!

Nice restaurant, friendly staff and quality tapas. If you do eat from the tapas menu the tables are small so we found it a bit akward with all the dishes. Also the portions are large so even though you feel you are not ordering enough it will be, 3 each was plenty! We arrived at 8 when it was quiet but soon after it was packed and you did have to shout to be heard so became very noisy. Definitely a place for groups rather than couples but well worth a visit. The huevos flamenco and squid were highlights to recommend.

When I lived in the Vauxhall/Stockwell area this my my default destination when I’d had a hard day and needed cheering up or I had something to celebrate. It was right at the end of my street which was a big plus, but I’d recommend it to anyone even if you don’t live 200 yards away.

The Tapas is the best I’ve tasted this side of Spain. Great chorizo, patatas bravas, bocorones… and fantastic bread from the brilliant bakery next door.

There is a 'proper’ restaurant at the back of Rebatos but I’d always recommend sitting near the bar at the front of the building where you can order tapas dishes and bottles of wine to your heart’s content.

The staff are great and there’s always a great section of specials waiting, depending on the time of year. There’s a lot of Spanish/Portugese places in this area but Rebatos is by far the best.

(Rebatos is also famous as being the place where a certain MI6 employee got drunk and left his briefcase full of state secrets behind, sparking a bit of a security scare).

Good value distinctive location, have had several very enjoyable nights here in the past - it’s best enjoyed with a large group of friends so you get to enjoy the wide variety of tapas on offer

Rebato’s is a really charming place. The waiters are lovely and helpful - although the service can vary between surprisingly prompt to a little wayward - the food scrumptious (juicy chorizo, plump prawns, light asparagus, all cooked beautifully)and all for a good price.

The best thing for me though is the place itself. Compared to your sleek wagamama’s and ping pongs this place is kitsch and cute. It feels loved. The walls are decked with spanish paraphenalia, bulls, shoes and amusingpictures and the furniture is cosy and well worn. A really fun place for dinner.

I’ve been to this place for over twenty years and it is my favourite restaurant – it’s not particularly grand, and I generally eat in the tapas section, but there isn’t an atmosphere to match it in London. It good value and has sensational lamb chops. All you can eat and a few drinks for around £20. Don’t panic if it looks full at the front, there is always a good turnover and you will get a table. 10/10.

Rebato’s is fantastic.

It’s a Spanish restaurant in the heart of little Portugal between Vauxhall and Stockwell.

Firstly, it always look shut, so try the door anyway.

The staff are so friendly. I once arrived an hour before my friends and had a great time on my own at the bar, reading the paper. The staff made conversation and kept giving me tapas with my drinks.

The front room, the bar, is dark and lush. You can eat in there.

The back room, the restaurant is brighter and more airy.

The food is very good, prices are quite reasonable. You can get tapas and normal meals. (i’m guessing, but i’d say about £25 per person with fair amount of food and wine).

Excellent place. Took me a year or so to discover that it wasn’t a dodgy place as you can’s see in and the entrance isn’t that special. Inside however it is buzzing any day of the week(Get there before 8 pm and you should be OK). Good food, normal prices and good service. My favourite are the lamb chops. Would recommend to eat in the bar area, rather than the proper restaurant.

I have to agree with Rob about this place. I was taken on a date there a few years back and had a great time. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the place along with the guys name...

Then I came across the great tapas bar and realised it was just down the road from my friends new flat. Perfect. Off we went.

It was just as good as I remember. Though I've also realised how great Sangria is inbetween visits.

All of the food here is good. Even stuff I don't usually eat. It's like being in Spain. I live there for a few months when I was a bratty little teenager so I know what tapas is meant to taste like. The specials are great and the staff are friendly.

I can't fault this place for anything. It's so hard to write a balanced review when I don't dislike anything about the place. Spain ins't exactly renowned for its desserts, but even those are great here.

I'm hungry now. I'm going to go back there this evening.
