It’s a really impressive bulding. Definately worth talking the time to walk from the southern to the northern viewpoint.

Unmissable. A walk across by foot is a fantastic experience (you can bus across and walk back - it’s quite a long way to walk there and back) and there are plenty of vantage points on land to take some iconic photos, too. The beaches on the Pacific side to the south also have some great views.
What impressed me most was the fact that such a great feat of engineering - it was the world’s longest single span from 1937 until 1964 - is also so beautiful, with its Art Deco detailing. (And don’t forget, it’s in an earthquake zone too).
I also had fun trying to spot the places where it appeared in the books by ‘Tales of the City’ by Armistead Maupin. (These books or the DVD of the TV series are also a must before a visit to SF, or make great reading while you are there).

Though the Golden Gate Bridge remains San Francisco’s signature sight, it symbolizes not only the city but also an era when California was viewed as the culmination of Western Civilization. It’s an impressive sight spanning some two miles between the exclusive Presidio neighborhood of the city proper with scenic Marin County to the north. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world

I had a view of the Golden Gate Bridge from my house but unfortunately I have moved and only have fond memories. It is a beautiful structure and a must see for all visitors to San Francisco. It is free to walk, bike or jog across so a great low budget experience.
I highly suggest walking across it and taking a moment along the way to have a look around and read the historical signs posted along the way. Bring your camera because the view in all directions is great.
It is the most expensive bridge to cross in the bay area, 5 bucks maybe 6, and if you can, avoid driving over it when possible. It is not easy to get to or from without sitting in loads of traffic and if you are doing it for the novelty, then when you drive across you think… I shoulda walked :)
Oh and yes 24 people jump “succesfully” to their death each year and loads more are dragged away quite quickly and discreetly. There are policeman who patrol and video the bridge and are able to foil many attempts. If you are morbidly interested, watch the documentary called “the bridge.” (Warning: it is about suicides off the bridge and has very graphic footage.)

I’d definitely recommend renting a bike at Fisherman’s Wharf and cycling across the bridge. It’s probably the best way to see the city. The views from the bridge are stunning and you can pretty much bike from the city to the Marin side of the bridge in about 45 mins.
As Ali mentioned - Watch out for jumpers!

Pretty much the most famous bridge in the world. No trip to San Francisco is complete without crossing it - by car, bike or foot.
On the Marin side you get a great view back to San Francisco, and the view that 90% of the photos are taken from. As far as tolls go, it’s free to walk or bike, but by car you have to pay in the direction of San Francisco (like all the Bay Area bridges).
One quirky, but very notable fact about the Golden Gate bridge is the incredibly high amount of people who chose to end their lives by jumping off it. The number is well into the 1,000s now.
