Walk past this unassuming cafe on Dalry Road any morning and hours before they open the team of bakers are busy working away in the back shop. You can see them from the road through the window. They make an amazing selection of sweet and savoury products from the Naples area of Italy, although I have seen a lot of similar looking cakes in the North of Italy.

The bakery here provides not only the Dalry Road shop with cakes, but also their smaller store on Elm Row and their restaurant Bella Mbriana, on East London Street.

The Dalry Road store seems to get busier and busier whenever I'm there. It really is a popular cafe in Edinburgh and fantasitc value for money.

Best time to go: Sunday morning. Sunday morning is when Dolce e Salato shows off all its finery. They seem to put out more cakes and food on this day than any other. Grab a smooth espresso and linger over the racks of choices. Get a trayful beautifully wrapped and take them home with change to spare for the bus.

This place is a real treat. Don't be put off by the unassuming exterior. Inside you'll find an array of freshly-made Italian delights - pizzas, filled Italian rolls, arancini, suppli, not forgetting the mouth watering selection of Italian cakes and pastries. You can take away your selection, or sit in and enjoy with a cup of their delicious coffee. The staff are very helpful and charming too.
