I went here the other weekend with friends who have a young child. I chose this venue as I’d heard that the Standing Order has a children’s licence and offers special ‘family’ rooms (small noisy rooms with tables way too close to each other). I won’t be back.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, this used to be a former bank. If you are in the bar area look up to the ceiling and you can see some of its former beauty and glory, giving you an idea of the past magnificence of this old building. Sadly, it now feels like a modern soulless noisy drinking den.

Yes, the food is good value. Nothing special but then again the price is cheap compared to other venues on George Street. I had a vegetable curry which was alright, and my partner had fish which was nice too. Drinks are reasonable priced too.

So why don’t I go back? Because whenever I closed my eyes I suddenly felt transferred back to McDonalds. The noise, dirty tables, staff that were run off their feet, and the crowds. It all contributed to feeling like I was in a fast food joint - only difference was that alcohol was being served here.

In conclusion, I’d say the Standing Order is perfect if all you’re after is a cheap meal and drinks. But stay well clear if you’re after an intimate dinner for two or something like that. It won’t score you any points-if anything, the opposite ;-)

Have you ever had a drink in a bank??!!!

This is your chance for it…because the Standing Order used to be a Bank! You can actually find the safe of the old bank inside a pub…

Actually, if you are nice enough to the staff and you have good connections (just a wink is enough, if you see what i mean) you will be able to convince the staff from this pub to open the door of the Safe for you…a bit scary if you get trapped inside because you cannot hear anyone screaming from the outside…

Great value for the food and you can actually get lots of deals according to the day of the week…you have a curry night, burger deals…

And best of all, you can watch live rugby or football games on the huge screen that they have in the main room. I mention, the main room because they have three more rooms full of books and pictures of main characters from Edinburgh. One of the rooms if specially reserved for families.

Nice and helpful staff and great prices for food and drink in a huge bar that is definately worth a visit, if not to the pub itself at least to check on the Bank Safe!

The Standing Order is part of the Weatherspoons chain and provides simple, affordable food and drink. It's located on Edinburgh's George Street, making it an ideal location for a shopping pit-stop or as a starting point for a pub-crawl along George Street. In contrast to other, nearby establishments, one can buy a round of drinks without worring too much about the cost. It's simple and serves its purpose, but don;t expect to be guaranteed a table. It's no hidden gem!

Centrally located in the heart of the happening George Street, this spacious and lively pub is housed in the neo-classical building that was formerly the 19th century Union Bank of Scotland. The high ceilings are dressed with elegant patterns while the carpeted floors and leather sofas offer a comfortable respite. A number of smaller rooms fitted with tables and chairs, lead from the main bar area and offer a slightly quieter and more secluded dining option.

The Standing Order can be relied on for cheap and cheerful food and drinks. Pastas, burgers and sandwiches can be washed down with a variety of cocktails, mixers, ciders and ales. The Sunday roast is an absolute must as generous portions and thick gravy provide a mouth-watering, plate-licking experience.

This pub is always a hype of activity with professionals, students and tourists making the most of the cheap offers and weekly meal deals. You are lucky to get a table over weekends so be prepared to wait for one or to share with others.

Cheap (in all possible ways) and you'll have to fight your way past all the smokers at the door...

This bar is an addition to the Wetherspoons bars. Its a bit of a let down, although the drinks are pretty cheap there is no music so there isn't much of an atmosphere. Its always crowded so its really hard to get to the bar let alone served. Thie bar is fine for a couple of drinks ona quiet night out but do not go if your going out afterwards, it kills the night.
