Surprisingly convenient - seems like MILES out of town cos it’s on the DLR, but it’s only a couple of stops away from Canning Town. Really tiny airport (kind of like Belfast City Airport for anyone that knows it) so not a lot on offer shopping or food-wise. But it’ll get you where you need to go (Rome in my case!).

much faster and less hassle to get through than other london airports and fairly accessible from the city centre. BUT if you are delayed you will find youself in a small overheated oven with no seats and nothing to do.

Not as bas as other members on qype are making it out to be… At the end of the day most airports are the same how good your experience is all down to luck. Some times you might get stopped for a random check or maybe your bag will get lost but its the same every where and as for the staff being rude…. well its also down to luck maybe they were just extremely busy on the particular occasion you guys visited but for me i had no problems with the city airport and i prefer it to other aiports such as luton due to its facilities and easy access to london.

granted it is handy to get into london, but parking charges are crazy, staff at airport rude, unhelpful, and still get delays, i have used the airport 6 times never again. the best choice is train or car

London City (LCY) is one of the best airports I’ve ever flown from. As all the other reviews have identified:

1) It’s well connected via the DLR to Canary Wharf and the City.
2) It’s compact and small with very short queues through security and check-on
3) It appears ‘safe’, the security professionals are more through actually than at Heathrow.
4) Baggage reclaim is a ten minute thing on return, not a 45min thing at Heathrow.

Prices from City can be higher than other airports and there are limited destinations, however if you book early KLM or VLM often have good prices to Europe. Be warned, parking is pretty expensive so make use of that DLR :)

Also if you don’t like flying be warned that the approach to LCY is one of the sharpest (most vertical) I’ve been on depending on plane and wind direction on the day. Amazing views, but stomach mashing :) Take-off is better and there are also great views, (I can see my house!)

I have flown into and out of LCY a few times. It is by far the most pleasent expereince of any of London’s airports. Taking off here allows you to have some great views of Canary Wharf, the docklands, Greenwich and more. Cecking in is a delight as you can be airside in minutes. and you do not need to turn up two hours before like at Heathrow, Luton or Gatwick.

Transport on the DLR takes you to the door of the airport and there are buses connecting with the Jubilee line at canning town. This is fantastic time saver and means you can sit down and get a coffee in peace.

Propeller planes are the order of the day here, but not every location is served from this airport so do your research carefully before expecting to visit London City Airport

I’ve surprised myself by awarding City Airport five starts, but really, compared to London’s other airports, it’s a dream.

As a Wapping local, this airport is only about 15 minutes from my front door and eminently reachable by either cab or the DLR.

For a small airport, the facilities are great. I’ve never experienced a delay of any kind getting through security… the security staff at Heathrow could learn a thing or two from their colleagues at City re. politeness and efficiency.

However, City’s growing popularity could be its undoing. The departures area is really too small and crowded at peak times. There are some extensions being put in place and the new bar/restaurant area is a great improvement.

21st century travel is far from pleasurable…but if you have to fly in/out of London, choose London City Airport.

When I flew out from City Airport I thought I’d always look back on the experience with mixed feelings. On the one hand there was a fire on the DLR on the way to the airport, which meant I had to unload on a freezing winter morning before 6am with the rest of the disgruntled passengers and figure out what bus to take and pray that I wouldnt miss my flight.

On the other hand, the compact airport proved to be just as everyone before has described, very quick and hassle-free. Only had to wait in line for a few minutes, and made it through security and onto my flight very quickly, with time for a coffee no less! Only since flying in and out of Heathrow since then have I truly come to appreciate the experience I had at LCY. Like most things in life, it’s a matter of relativity.

It might seem a bit odd writing a reveiw of an airport, but just like the last person I have to say it is SOOO much easier tofly from here that from the big airports. Having recently got stuck in Heathrow for hours at the baggage claim - because our plane had landed (literally) miles away I sat thinking just how convenient City airport is.
Because it is so small you get through security and baggage claim in a fifth of the time it takes at Gatwick or Heathrow - Stanstead even. And if you get to Canary wharf on the jubilee line (just 10 mins from Waterloo, 20 mins from Bond street) and take a cab for 10 mins, you are there - and if there are two of you or more for far less than the price of a Heathrow express ticket.
I heard that they have added some extra restaurants - that was the only thing lacking really (well that and a few shops).

I’ve only flown in/out of here a few times. But, I have to say those experiences were so much more hassle-free than dealing with any other London airport. And it’s so frickin’ easy to get to. It’s the ideal airport for me.

I was very impressed with London City Airport on the two occasions I have used it. Queues are always manageable and passport control and security is a breeze compared to Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow! Transport links are great- the DLR is right there and ultra efficient. I definitely pick this as an airport of choice when I go away!

London City Airport is rather fabulous, but for sheer architectural style you cant beat Copenhagen Airport...it has to be the most fabulous in Europe (the fact that I'm half Dansk hasn't influenced me in the slightest)

This was my first time at the City Airport, and what a delight.

Having experienced Heathrow and Frankfurt on the outward legs of the journey - and both were good examples of how big is not always better - coming to somewhere small is a revelation. We walked off the plane all of 30m to the 'gate' - or a door, in this case: and a short walk, no queues at passport control, to the smallest baggage reclaim I've ever seen (two belts) and then into the small but airy terminal. Although it is small, it has all the basic range of shops and services that you are likely to need.

Even better, the new Docklands Light Railway station has been built onto the terminal building, so it's only another 50m walk - all on the level, from the runway! Trains run at 5-10 minute intervals to Bank, making it very convenient for Canary Wharf. Passengers for the West End might want to change at Canning Town onto the Jubilee Line, which offers a rather faster service through to Waterloo, Westminster and Bond Street.

I recently discovered that you can get from Hamburg directly to London's City airport. A highly recommendable experience if you do not mind Propeller planes.

(I like them actually and their carbon footprint is considerably lower than that of jets). The flight time is 1 hour and 35 which is exactly the same as you will have with a jet to Heathrow circling over Nother London.

The airport is way too small and at the same time extremely convenient. It is therefore extremely busy for it’s size. But as opposed to Heathrow where the limiting factor seems to be the handling of the masses of people, the only problem at City seems to be that there is only one small runway and no space.

It is actually the only airport I know of where your plane will be parked in backwards like you park your car.

The rest is one of the most delightful experiences you can have: You hop off the plane, take a 60 second bus ride to the terminal. I had to wait for 20 seconds for the passport control. Then you leave the building after maybe 45 more seconds. Very convenient for investment bankers.

The only five star airport for me.
