I’m only giving The New Rose two stars because the first two times were finally. However, my last encounter here was absolutely terrible. Bar staff were rude and unhelpful. There was no one inside for lunch, and all I asked for was if I could get the squid to go. I brought my own container, and I live right behind for god’s sake, so I really don’t think it’s that difficult for you to put squid into a container rather than a plate. The bar staff made it sound like I was asking for a roast turkey to go. I get that you’re just a ****ing pub, but it wouldn’t hurt to be slightly helpful or kind at all.
Great islington pub - nice staff, good food
Always a nice atmosphere. great 2 for 1 offer on pizzas on a monday
Also own Filthy McNastys which is a fantastic local pub on Amwell Street.
Recommend both these places!
I like the New Rose - it used to be my local - there is usually a mix of interesting folks.
Good for: Football and 2-4-1 pizzas on Mondays.
Not the usual Islington hang out, which is a good thing.
A Rock n Rollin' Gastro Pub.
Who'd have though it eh ?
We own it so we love it.
We think it's one of the finest pubs we could have made but keep watching 'cos we aint finished yet.
We have been voted in the top 2 new pubs in London. The best burger in London, one of London's cosiest pubs and now we are working on the best coffee and then real ale. Come see what you think of it yourselves though if you want the full New Rose experience.
Our favourite review however is "a shouty pub full of drunken estate agents" ha ha. We couldn't have made that one up...
We are aiming to make it better still though.
At the end of the day, it's just another pub.
Getting there, needs to up the number of ales, get rid of the sparklers though, decent sounds, one of the better pubs in Islington....
This was the first pub I discovered when I moved to the area…but it obviously didn’t leave much of an impression as it has taken me over 3 years to come back.
It is actually quite a pleasant pub. I like the green tiled exterior and the dimly lit interior and the selection of ales served in dimpled mugs. They have a couple of big screens so this could also be a decent place to come for a match. What I didn’t like was how much of a head they seemed to leave on everyone’s ales. I don’t like complaining about that kind of thing in person, so I am instead registering my displeasure here by only giving it a 3.
Oh I like the New Rose!
...not only because I watched Wales give England a good hiding in a six nations rugby game recently but also because it’s just… how shall I put it, nice!
Being in the throws of winter I found the New Rose to have such a fire-warm comfortable cosyness to it and filled with a nice crowd - despite the rugby on… and England losing. Oh, and I hadn’t even realized that it was Valentine’s day which goes to show just what a nice unpretentious place it is.
I was mainly drinking their house rum which is brilliant - I’m normally extremely fussy when it comes to this sort of thing but I can highly recommend it.
If the place was a tree I’d give it a hug.
This is a cracking pub! Day or night I’ve always had a fun time. Even the bouncers (yep, this place gets packed on a Fri and Sat night - no charge to get in though) will have a bit of banter with you.
On Mondays they do a good value 2 4 1 pizza deal and they’ll cater for parties and private bookings too - they had a wedding here this summer.
The djs play some great music, a real mix of styles and they have tvs for sport watchers, a secret garden out back - not much of a sun trap mind. Real fires to cosy up round and a attract a great crowd.
It’s a friendly, fun, local boozer that’s definitely worth a visit.
I went there the other day and I felt at home: great music (anything from Madonna to Desmond Dekker), great staff (with the exception of some dozy barmaid) and great crowd (think Shoreditch dressing down). It reminded me that it’s cool not to be a student anymore and to be over 25! GREAT.
