I went here for an art exhibition last night, so I was shocked to discover that the bar had since closed down! Although it's a fair distance from Chalk Farm station the bar is worth the trek. The gallery is fantastic and really adds to the whole indie feel of the pub. I was a bit put off by the open plan kitchen in the middle of the gallery, but not enough to stop me visiting again, unless of course it has closed down!
Pint prices for the area are also extremely reasonable and the live acts playing were very good. The bar is extremely atmospheric and the red walls, candles and wooden floors give it a part indie, part countryside pub feel.
Alas, now closed down, but back in the day this was a fantastic pub, if a little out of the way! The bar staff were 2nd to none, but have now moved into the acting profession.
How on earth have i never reviewed Monkey Chews!? This place is a real gem, although i heard it’s closing down? Great selection of cocktails and quality live and DJ music…. AND, my buddy Christos works here and he’s a legend. Check it out! One of the best pubs North of the river.
Monkey Chews is an awesome little pub just round the corner from Chalk Farm tube. The main draw is the venue - a small room upstairs where bands play. Talk about intimate - the place looks busy if there are more than 10 people in the audience, which makes for a great atmosphere.
I was fortunate enough to see the very wonderful Ruth Theodore play here a couple of years ago and it was so refreshing to be able to get up close to watch someone play instead of squinting at them from the back end of a big, busy room. Obviously Monkey Chews brings in lesser known artists and bands but in my view the calibre of musician they book are no less interesting to watch than some of the bands that get booked in to the nearby Roundhouse.
Good cocktails all served in an ambience somewhere between a brothel, a punk club and a public toilet. Service is laid back to say the least but this is not the sort of place you should hurry over. Surprisingly wide range of clientele and a big booze list although a lot of the drinks we wanted on our visit were unavailable.
A nice little place, tucked away in Chalk Farm with a very different feel to it. A good spread of beers and friendly staff combined with a decent menu of good, hearty food all add up to a great place to spend an evening. As mentioned by other reviewers; Monkey Chews is very dark inside and this certainly helps add to the ambience - recommended.
This used to be my local, it a lovely bar that serves great comfort food like roast chicken and mash potatoes! mmmm!
It's off the beaten track but it's such a gem, the interior reminds me of some of the pubs i used to visit in Brooklyn, it's quite dark, red walls, lots of candles! just how i like it!
The music is cool and there are live acts some nights.
Check it out if you are in the neighbourhood.
