Music is top 40, with a little room dedicated to your rock and 80s tunes.
About the drinks... plastic cups are cheap but I guess they have to be. The various mixers you can order... are definitely NOT coke or lemonade. You have no idea what's in the mixers, and for one I cannot buy drinks from somewhere that falsely advertises their mixers.
Drink some "coke" next time you're there... and tell me that's coke you're tasting. They just rely on people being too smashed to even notice.
All in all... fine if you're a teenager. Look elsewhere if you're older.

When it gets too busy the bouncers go round with pens and score out peoples stamps for no reason and use the excuse "you have had too much to drink" which basically translates to "the club is full and there are underage girls outside waiting to get in, you are male and over 18 so get out"

By my standards, The Hive is what I imagine hell to be like; crowded, hot and full of all the tossers you'd hoped to never see again.
Oh, and you have to pay to be there.
But I know that people expect different things from clubs, and aiming for neutrality, here are things you might like:
If you are looking to hook up with someone (this, I think, is what people mean by having had 'a great night' at The Hive) this is the place to go. I think this is the reason people still go there, it's like a legitimate brothel.
The drinks are relatively cheap, but if you are willing to look you'll probably match their prices.
If you want a LOT of photographs to prove you were there, you will get them. Every night spawns a facebook album of generally more than 200 pictures. Be careful you are not caught cheating by a sly photographer, as your significant other will find the proof very easily (I've witnessed this).
Generally, I'd say its a good thing the drinks are so cheap, because you'll need a lot of them to convince yourself you had a good night at The Hive. I would guess that so many people seem to enjoy this club as so many of its clientèle are 16 and 17 year olds who haven't yet realised there are better clubs out there.

I have been here once and it was minging, sweaty (the walls were dripping, really?!) and generally just a rank place to be!
Really would never go back here, plastic cups bleeeurgh!

This is the worst club in Edinburgh. If you want:
- awful music
- a gross venue
- rude staff
- underage clientele
then go here, but my advice avoid it as much as you can.

The Hive is one of those clubs that you love to hate but adore deep down. It's dark, grungy, sweaty (anyone who has been in summer and NOT melted, please contact me, as Medical Science needs you), usually too crowded and full of drunken raucous students. Some of the staff look frankly terrifying and pissed off and the bouncers have been known to be fairly unfair before.
However, those raucous students tend to be enjoying themselves hugely. As many people have pointed out, Hive is one of the cheapest clubs in Edinburgh in terms of drinks and cocktails with fairly generous entry on the nights that require payment (few). It also has a great range of music nights with DJs catering to different music tastes from Metal to Indie to Electropop and Chart Cheese on different nights. Also, handily, there are usually people going around to take pictures of you dancing to this genre that you're slightly unfamiliar with as you are too drunk too. How kind of them.
I have never failed to have fun on a night out in Hive. I don't know if it's the atmosphere or the crowd or the clientelle - but everyone tends to be very friendly and very happy who goes, and I would recommend it for a cheap, casual night out. So casual in fact, you don't even need to wear anything dressy - just jeans and a tshirt does you fine.

My first piece of advice before you go to The Hive is- Don't have expectations as it won't meet any of them.
Its dark, its dingy the drinks come in plastic cups and most of the staff look like they would rather be anywhere else in the world.
Saying that however I never fail to have a good night at the Hive. The music isn't what I would listen to at home but I still manage to enjoy myself. There are 3 rooms and every night of the week it plays different music so you are sure to find a night that you enjoy.
Its cheap as chips which is the only reason I think it has such a huge following, as clubs in Edinburgh are notoriously expensive.
Unlike other clubs in the City it doesn't take itself seriously and you can go in your oldest skinnies, a t-shirt and trainers and still feel comfortable and not thinking you wish you had made more of an effort.
Most of the people I have met in The Hive are really nice and friendly.
Pick a group of friends who like to have a laugh, and aren't into glamorous clubs and expensive drinks and you will have a great time.

The Hive is always a great night out. With music to suit everybody and the best drinks deals around (Not to mention a whole room dedicated to fantastic cocktails and leather sofas!) It's always brilliant banter, without a doubt my favourite club in Edinburgh.

Excellent Edinburgh nightclub located in a perfect central location. One of the most student friendly clubs around, it always has a great crowd and really friendly and helpful staff, I've never had a dull night out at the hive! The music varies night to night, from chart hits to alternative anthems, all expertly mixed by the hive's regular djs. Drink promos keep the costs down, and free entry before 11pm really draws the students out. I always find the bar/cloakroom service really speedy, which is usually rare in city clubs as popular as this. All in all an excellent venue!
