Originally a gay club called Bernard’s (back in the 70’s) South is definitely a place that should be on anyones itinerary for nightclubs in Manchester. Now in it’s 13th year, this virtually hidden club is one of the few places which has an appeal outside of the student nights, glossy over hyped joints and the ‘take themselves too seriously’ clubs in the city. There’s little too the place - a bar, a ‘bijou’ dance floor and, most importantly, a fine rack of musical meals served fresh and hot into your lugs. Perhaps not as revered as other Manchester institutions such as ‘electric chair’ and ‘tangled’ (at least one of which is sadly spinning discs in the club in the sky) it has nonetheless created a devoted crowd who return each week. Aside from the sweaty labyrinth exterior (which of course is what you want right?) the acoustics are spot on i.e. you can feel your viscera having their own party within your person due to the ‘pumping sounds’ shot out from the neck of the speaker system. Clint Boon has a real love of music and is a genuine personality (his stints on XFM affirm that). Embrace lead singing man Danny McNamara also occasionally spins acetates here, although he can be now found at his new club ‘Aftershow’.
If you’re looking for a bit of a groove and a top night out and you’ve friends up, then you could do a lot worse than South.

South is one of the best nightclubs in the world! Great music, legendary Djs, cheapish drink, fantastic atmosphere and friendly staff. It is really small and very plain so don’t be expecting anything grand. This is definately a club for laid back people who love good music and love to boogie. It is usually very busy so as the others have already said, make sure you get there early to avoid disappointment.

South is one hundred percent a top night out in the city centre. As has been mentioned, the entry charge might seem a little on the steep side – but this does keep the students away, meaning an older crowd that will appreciate the always outstanding tunes on offer. If you’re into fancy décor and comfy seating, South may not be your cup of tea. But then again, the lack of the afore mentioned items does keep away the posers. For fans of good music who like to party in the company of down to earth folk, South is highly recommended.

A real gem of a nightclub in Manchester. A real eclectic sound in here playing indie, rock, pop and soul. Second homes for Clint Boon and Dave Haslam. Can get very busy so turn up early to avoid the ques. No grand ideas with regards to decor and toilet facilities could do with a touch up, but people don't come here to be seen, people come here purely for the music.

This club is a bit of a Manchester legend. Its a real basement dive, with crap toilets ( though they've been done up recently I hear), sticky floors and cheapish drinks. However nobody comes here for the decor, or to see and be seen. Its all about the music. The real joy of South is that it can feel a bit like a party - the DJ (Clint Boon, Dave Haslam or a guest depending on your night) seems to be having as much fun as the punters. The music is eclectic and fantastic, from indie through to soul, funk and rock'n'roll. Requests are always welcomed, there's no dress code, and you can't buy tickets in advance for regular nights so get there early (9:30) if you don't fancy queuing round the block.

South is a small, city centre, basement club that's currently open Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday nights- 'Another Planet'- are dj'ed by ex-Hacienda dj Dave Haslam, who plays a mixture of classic and modern indie and soul; Saturday's 'Clint Boon's Disco Rescue' are overseen, as the title suggests, by local legend Clint Boon who plays mainly indie stuff.
The rather steep door charge (between £4 and £7) and bar prices (cheapest drinks are around £2.50) generally keeps the student crowds away, making this the ideal club for slightly older indie fans.
The djs really know their stuff, meaning there's no generic indie tunes and every night is very different from the last, and are open to requests. Great atmosphere and a wicked night out.
Get there early to avoid queues and (on especially busy nights) the risk of being turned away.
