Compliment

Princes Street, Edinburgh, boasts a spectacular view of the Edinburgh Castle, access to the National galleries, and the Princes gardens is a lovely place to stop for a picnic or a sit on a bench. Princes Street is a virtual outdoor shopping precinct- the street is bustling with shoppers each day. The major chains (the usual suspects) all vie for your attention with fetching window displays. But one shop goes that extra bit further- it tempts your scent palate with lovely floral notes- long before the shop in question is even in site. The shop, Lush Handmade Cosmetics, may be familiar to most United Kingdom shoppers- it is a UK institution, started from scratch in Poole. However, tourists from abroad may be new to Lush- and the concept of 'fresh' cosmetics. The store itself is based on the premise that cosmetics should be treated in a similar manner to produce:(which, a read of the ingredients will tell you, comprises many of the products!) all products are stamped with an expiry date- in the manner of dairy products. The grocery store theme is not carried out in the ambience of the place: its like Willy Wonka's come to life! Blocks of colourful soap, bath bombs festooned with glitter or sea salt, madly wrapped gifts ensure that this place is more of an event than a shopping excursion. There are many testers that you are encouraged to try, a soap that looks
like jelly, face masks that are kept in a fridge, and each time I've gone in the staff seem more like tour guides than shop assistants: giving out free samples and doing fun demonstrations. It's a must-see and a must-smell shop that is unlike any other shop, ever. Its fine to just stroll around- you don't feel pressured to buy anything- but you are encouraged to try things on. The building itself is gorgeous with cornices and a view of the gardens that is spectacular. A stroll down Princes street demands a pop-in.
