As with all Brewer’s Fayre branded pubs, this is a very family orientated place. Absolutely perfect if you have young children - for the price of less than a pint (around two our our British pounds), you get to throw your child into the indoor play area and lose them for a while (ok, so not literally 'throw them’).
The indoor play area is absolutely superb…be warned of staff walking around wearing ridiculously brightly coloured clown-looking costumes however - they really couldn’t pay me enough to work there and wear that. But there’s face painting going on, ball pools, arcade style games, small rides and a huge climbing area with rope ladders and all kinds. The play area is sectioned into two areas, therefore is suitable for younger children of toddler age and for older children too. All children are given bibs to wear on signing in - the idea being, if they’re to try and escape, the electronic tags set off an alarm when they’re running out the door of the pub. Genius, eh?
The pub itself is divided into three distinct areas…the bar area (a child free zone), a restaurant style area, and a restaurant style area alongside the 'Fun Factory’ so that parents can keep an eye on their little 'uns - there’s tv screens showing CCTV images of the play area in this section.
The food? Well, the least said about this the better, I think. It’s most likely microwaved, uninspired and in the ready-meal format. I’ve never been all that impressed with the food in there yet. However the menu is pretty extensive and caters very well for children with plenty of meal deals. You’d never really go to Brewsters for the food. You’ll go there to give your kids a treat, so they can run around like crazy and burn off some energy in the Fun Factory, while you enjoy a drink and yes…have lunch or dinner on the side.
I never quite understand why child-free folk would go into Brewsters just for a drink. I mean, they do. But the food is mediocre, the bar area is 'ok’, and there are children running around continually (at least until about 9pm). And there are nicer pubs around in Newhaven anyway. However, if you have children, Brewsters is definitely a hit. Children’s parties are very popular here, and the place is always heaving on a bank holiday. Take your kids along and they’ll love it. But personally I’d give this place a wide berth when you’ve got a babysitter!
