This small space is packed with some of London's most famous landmarks: Big Ben, Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. This Christmas there are the added treats of the Christmas markets and ice-rink. Wonderfully festive :)
At all times of year, at all times of the day, there is a real buzz about the place as everyone takes endless photographs of the area. I most like coming here at dusk, when everything is lit up, and I can warm my fingers on sugared peanuts from the street vendors.
If you have a bit more money to spend, there are some attractions to occupy the time: an aquarium, arcades etc. I'd personally recommend just soaking the atmosphere, and using it as a starter point to explore other places. (The walk along the river towards Southwark is particularly lovely, and passes many famous places: skate park, OXO tower, Tate Modern etc)
Enjoy!

The South Bank is absolutely beautiful in summer. Stroll all the way down and enjoy the sights. Watch the skaters and bikers pull off stunts down in the underground skate park, and depending when you go, sample some of the foods down at the market or pick up a second hand book.

(The address West Smithfield EC1 is
incorrect, but I was unable to alter it)

One of the best places to hang out in London. I go to the BFI South Bank to watch old films and see famous people talk about their movies. I like walking and talking through the galleries. I frequently use the open spaces in Hayward and in the BFI to have one to one meetings.
There is always something on at Xmas and in the summer for families. The E4 festival Udderbelly had a great performance of Michael Morpurgo’s tragic Private Peaceful.
I also come here after I have been to the theatre. I walk down from Covent Garden, down by Charing Cross station and the alleyway takes me to the bridge near Embankment Station which leads to the South Bank, it’s great walk.

Depending on the time of year you can really have a relaxed break on the south bank. Although there may be plenty of tourists, the large array of restraunts and cafes make it a pleasurable place to spend your summer days.

Sorry to be grumpy but I hate the South Bank , really loathe it . From Westminster Bridge to Southwark Bridge its like a preview of Hell . Speaking personally all the " performers " really annoy me . Dressing like a prat and standing very still is not an art form – nor is riding an exercise bike in a fish suit . The noise and crowds , combined with these " acts " make it very overloading . You know that old song by Bob Dylan ( Or My Chemical Romance ) , Desolation Row , well ….

Luv it, you can walk as slow or as brisk as you wish depending on how much time you have to spend. It is interesting from start to finish and that is without diverting through the markets or other interesting areas. If its raining you can drop in at the Tate but thats another story.
