I first went to this hidden Hoxton bar when a friend of mine was playing a gig there and surrounded by mates and decent music, I thought it was genius. And reasonable for the Old Street location.
But when we returned some Fridays later, what sight should meet our eyes but a ton of over-dressed Shoreditch types trying not to gurn too aggressively and unsure how to pose at the same time as shuffling to Girls Aloud. There was a girl on the dance floor touching herself at one point. Don’t think it was ironic.
In short - a nice enough venue, just take care what night you go there or you may get a nasty surprise.

A nice, unpretentious pub in the heart of Hoxton. Frequented by rock and roll and trendy types, also thanks to the live bands playing here. This place is easy going and perfect for a few drinks with friends. It was made famous by Amy Winehouse’s husband: he beat up the pub landlord.

In years to come the Macbeth will be credited as one of the most exciting live music venues of our times. It has staged performances form almost all of the really interesting bands who are currently emerging from the underground and I’m sure will have a lot more in the next few years. It seems to change hands all the time but the last few owners have all hosted great nights including ‘Delete Yourself’, ‘Lazy Gramophone’, ‘The Parlour’ and loads more.
Entry is around £4 and beer is really reasonable with decent offers. You will be surrounded by all the bright and beautiful young things of the generation born between 1980 and 1990.
A Great Venue.

Went the the Macbeth to see a secret gig by the Good Shoes. Was awesome. A very small venue but that didn’t deter people from crowd surfing! There is a really friendly atmosphere and surprisingly good sound. I agree that If you didn’t know it was there you wold walk straight past as it is very dark.

On my visit it was the summer and incredibly hot and sweaty, so the darkness was welcome so my sweaty bettyness could hopefully go unnoticed!

Just discovered this place the other night when I went with a friend who wanted to see Naked and the Boys, who were playing there. It’s a cool little place, with a bar area, pool table and sofa area, and also a strange little gallery upstairs which looks more like someone’s living room. They’ve always got different and interesting live music going on there, so it’s a good place to check out.

Great bar, I spent New Years eve here this year and had a great night. Definately way more grungy than the majority of the bars you will find in Hoxton! which is a good thing in my opinion!

friendly people, everyone seemed to be out to have a good time and a dance! If you want a break from the music there is a little cosy lounge to relax in upstairs.

I've been told they have live music here every week! Must check it out some time!

Well recommended!

Hoxton is full of bars providing live music, but none are quite as grungy as the Macbeth. Situated halfway down Hoxton Street, it would be quite easy to walk straight past, if it wasn't for the dirty riffs permeating the pubs walls.

The venue does host a variety of music most nights of the week, and is very often free, the beer is fine, and the nights can get messy. In an area where cool is the rule, the Macbeth doesn't follow trends, and is all the better for it.
