I like the pub but would not eat the Sunday roast again. I had to send mine back after being given a plate of fat and gristle instead of roast lamb but to their credit, they did change it right away and without question. Still, the roast potatoes were only just cooked and not remotely crisp, the carrots advertised as “buttered” had never sniffed a butter dish and I’m sorry, but who eats boiled parsnips? Everything was unseasoned and bland. On the whole, not worth £8.90.

What was a rather standard and depressing South London railway pub has been given a full Mitchel and Butlers relaunch. The soft furnishings and wide range of continental beers is another impressive addition to their roster.

The excellent in-house-music choices on our visit only added to our favorable impression. Very much in keeping with the gradual gentrification of Herne Hill.

If you miss your train from Herne Hill. don`t stand on the platform cursing your inability to run up stairs fast enough. Go for a light ale or lager in the Commercial.

This is a cool spot sat virtually plum opposite the exit for Herne Hill station. Decked out in dark woods inside, it wouldn’t be a bad place to take someone for a midweeker, but I’ve had some good friday nights here and some decent Sunday afternoon hangover nosh. The small triangular smoking area out the back has a large mirror on each side, which is always good for a reassuring “how you doin’? “, but perhaps a little disconcerting when hungover. I’ve always found the bar staff quick and friendly and there’s a big screen for rugby and a good atmosphere. If you still want more come closing, go boogie unashamedly in Escape next door.
