I live in NYC and travel to London on business regularly, and I have been coming to the Rose & Crown for a few years. I found this tiny salon by accident, and as long as Rick remains there and I still have a job in London, I will never get my hair cut anywhere else. Not only does the haircut last (it grows in really well even if I let it go for 4 months) but it looks good even when I style it myself. That's a true test of a good cut. Rick is genius with scissors who understands hair. And the prices are very reasonable.

My wife has been going to Rick at RoseandCrown for years and years and years. She is a very, very fussy person who is only able to accept one standard in everything she does; perfection. She just said to me, "Someone has been saying something bad about Rick's hairdressing on a site called QYPE. Can you have a look and write something good for me."

Well, I had a look at guess what? 99.9% of people here think exactly what my wife thinks, that Rick is a great hairdresser. I see one person who has taken to this comment section to say otherwise and I have to ask why anyone would do such a thing? Why not go back to Rick and speak with him, why go around posting comments in places you think might damage a reputation?

Nope, my wife trusts Rick with her hair every month and believe me that means he's good.

I am VERY suspicious about hairdressers. We live in Italy and we usually go for a haircut in France , or even in Sweden. This time we tried London.
"
I said to my husband: "You go first ! If the result is not good I will tell them that I am ill and we ll go away.

I didn t even need ONE minute to understand that this was the right place! The way Rick immediately "understood our hair" was something that we are not used to in Italy.

Both of us had a very nice haircut, and on the next day I went back to have some colour done to my "ratlooking" hair!

Decided I needed to change my style after having it long and straight for 7 years. I asked to go shorter but with long shaggy layers. When I went in my hair was past shoulder length, all one length. It looked okay when I left but when I did my hair at home I realised that some of my hair had been hacked so much some of it was about a centimetre long! The longer lengths at the side were uneven and I had this weird angled down fringe.

I found the Rose and Crown through Qype five years ago, chanced it, and have never gone anywhere else since! Brilliant cuts at a very good price for the area and, as importantly, a good eye for what will suit you and the amount of time you can spend on your hair. (Plus Rick's got a great eye for vintage furniture, sound music taste, and good chat, so it's a nice place to come.) I no longer live in London but still make trips in/ stay late after work to come here; and trust these guys enough to have experimented more with colour and some less obvious styles in the last year. Thank you!

Review of Rose and Crown hairdressers from 11 February 2013

First-rate hairdressers with a great atmosphere in the heart of the West End. I've been a customer of owner Rick since his Archive days. Since last year's refit it now has fantastic vintage furniture in use and for sale - which other hairdressers has a boat shaped cocktail bar in the basement? - and the walls are often adorned with the work of upcoming artists.

Of course all this would be meaningless if they didn't offer great haircuts, which I can assure you they do. Not only do I always leave very happy with my hair – and I've had a variety of looks over the years – but in all the time that I've been going there I've never seen anyone leave disappointed.

I'd say that it's one of the best hairdressers in the London, but I can't really compare as since Rick started cutting my hair I haven't thought about going anywhere else.

I got a great haircut as-per-usual here yesterday! Also the vibe in the salon is really friendly and welcoming and I have been a long standing customer of Ricks for these reasons. I Wouldn't trust anybody else! They even went above and beyond to slot me in when it was suitable for me - couldn't be a more happy customer! Josh.

I really cannot understand how this place has so many five star reviews, as my haircut experience was one of the worst I've ever had.
Looking into other reviews ratings you can notice, that last 10 positive reviews created in 10 days, which is very suspicious – all by new users. Most hairdressers don’t have so many reviews (even big names) in total as this small place was able to generate in 2 weeks. You decide…

You seem to be commenting on everyones review and you seem to be writing more and more bad reviews yourself, something just doesnt add up here, it seems like you have some personal vendetta. We get it, you dont like the salon, you dont like Rick. Fine, get over it. I really like the salon and really like Rick. End of.

Love, love, love my hair cut!

I have super thick unmanageable naturally curly hair (that I always straighten) - my hair scared off my last hairdresser, who wouldn't cut it more than half an inch for fear of it all going outwards. I told Rick this upon arrival, and said I'd paid a ridiculous amount of money for a haircut in Sean Hanna that made me look exactly as I did when I had walked in - so today I actually wanted it cut to my shoulders, with some layering.

Rick was utterly lovely, and I really enjoyed chatting about his great little quirky salon, and his passion for interesting antique furniture (displayed about the salon). He made me feel immediately at ease, and 'got' what I wanted after a brief explanation and a few stupid hand gestures by me!

The cut and finish cost me £38 (I think I got student discount..?), which is great value particularly bang in the middle of town.

This salon feels like a Covent Garden's best kept secret when you stumble upon it. A real gem of a find - I'm feeling very smug that I found it!

I have been going to the rose and crown for 3 years and love it. Rick is a great guy, really good haridresser. I love the location, I love the style and decor of the salon.
Huge array of styles and different cutting techniques. I have had modern cutting edge styles, classic business cuts and vintage short back and sides. Rose and Crown is exactly what I look for in a hair salon.

I have been going to Rose and Crown for nearly 4 years, and they have never disappointed! When I lived in Paris for two years I even made the journey back to London just to get my hair cut by Rick! I love the salon, the friendly atmosphere, and the fact that Rick remembers exactly what I want. Plus the incredible value for money. Definitely the one of the best hairdressers in London, I can't imagine going anywhere else!

I don't ask much from a hairdresser. I want a nice atmosphere in the salon, a comfy chair, a stylist who takes their time to get it right and I want to leave feeling good. I kid you not it's taken me years to find all of these in one place but they're all present at Rose and Crown. If you want sycophantic customer service this might not be your place. But if you want your hair cut for a decent price by someone who knows what they're doing and can hold up their end of a conversation, give it a go. I don't go anywhere else now.

I often read review sites ,like qype,but never seem to find the time to contribute. This morning I traveled from Eastbourne to London for a,all to scarce,job interview. With the adverse snowy weather I left a few hours early and inevitably found myself arriving a few hours early. So with a couple of hours to kill I headed to Covent garden for a spot of window shopping. It didn’t take me long, while catching glimpses of myself in shop windows, to realise that I looked like I’d just got out of bed. In a panic and fuelled with caffeine,i looked to make amends. Out the corner of my eye I noticed someone unlocking a door to a shop ,sign saying student discount and barber’s chairs through the window. I followed the guy in and explained I had to make myself presentable ,quite quickly. He tells me to sit down ,wait 15 minutes while he opens up,gives me a cup of coffee,shares his morning croissants and all the time chatting to me about the options for that all important life changing haircut. Then after showing a few ideas on iPad and explaining its possible to have a head of hair both suitable for the office and the pub on a Saturday night the scissors come out. 20 minutes later and I’m looking in mirror at a new person . The owner brushes me down and even lends me a tie, letting me know that I can return it if I get the job and I’m off with a confidence boosting new look. I can’t fault the customer service and I can’t fault the haircut. Thanks Rick and I hope to return the tie soon.

I found Rose and Crown four years ago after reading the glowing reviews on Qype. I've paid silly money in the past for supposedly "top stylists" and no-one has ever cut my hair better than Rick. From day one it was clear he was a true professional, you don't stay in business for as long as he has without being a master. I've lost count of the number of times friends have complemented my hair and asked where I get it cut. Rick is discreet but friendly; there's usually a beer on offer too!

Rick helped me work out a style for my wedding last year and is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to all things vintage; he even took me round the hidden fabric shops of the West End to find the right material for my suit. Absolutely top bloke

Mikikip – are you in anyway connected to Litkip and Lukess? You all joined Qype yesterday and posted only one negative review (about Rose and Crown). I apologise if this is coincidence.
Perhaps you would like to be a little more constructive in your criticism rather than “the worst I’ve ever had”.
Digit in the name? Not sure what your point is about me using my year of birth.
Anyway, I’m more than happy to provide you with any evidence you need to be satisfied I am not an " internet alter ego" of Rick. If you PM me I could send you a picture of the great haircut Rick did for my wedding? How about a video call? I’m often in central London maybe we could meet up? As a final suggestion I could send you my nursing registration PIN number and you could check that I actually exist with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Funny :)… I can send you photo of Pamela Anderson. It is clear, that Rick does self-promotion, so please don’t insult my intelligence with your essays about how Rick so changed your life, that you can’t live without that. I can name you a number of hairdressers, which are 100 better and with number of awards and they have max 10 reviews. This place has almost 100, which taking into account its small size is complete nonsense. I can understand self-advertising, but Rick went too far. He not only lie to potential customers, he is also make look stupid real customers, who provided feedback on this site. That should stop.

Having read some of the short and unexplained negative reviews below I felt compelled to write my own review. Having moved to London 5 years ago I struggled to find a consistent hairdresser which I could trust. I came across the Rose and Crown 2 years ago and have never looked back. I have not come across any salon in London which can rival this one for style, quality and friendliness. The salon is fitted with edgy furniture, artwork and even a small bar downstairs which all adds to the character of the place. It throws back to Carnaby street at its height, and is a fantastic tardis away from the chaos of central London. The owner Rik, welcomes you on arrival, offering you a choice of drink and makes you feel instantly at home. A consultation follows and I have never had anything to complain about with the subsequent hair cut: all at a very reasonable price that puts Toni and Guy to shame. I always look forward to visiting here and I urge you to try the same.

Been going to Rose and Crown for about a year and use Rick. He's extremely experienced and really good at what he does. I struggle to see how you would find a better haircut in central London for the money. He's the best hairdresser that I have ever had!
