when i moved back to liverpool in November ‘06 I said to my flatmate that i didn’t mind where we lived, as long as it was in one of the nice leafy suburbs in L17 next to the park. Sefton park. Reason? Well, sefton park contains 2.6km² of trees, water features and grass.
Perfect for a summers day. As has been noted in other reviews, Lark Lane is just round the corner for refreshments and food. There’s also a cafe in the middle.

Highlights: the boating lake, the palm house (with a peter pan statue), the daffodils round the eastern edge in the springtime, the slightly overgrown patches here and there and the grassy spaces for football, frisbee and barbecues.

Otterspool park is also nearby for those wanting a view of the mersey. You want more? ok, the circumference is about 2.4m/3.8km so it’s a nice run. Most people run anti-clockwise why? i’ve noticed people seem to prefer to run anticlockwise the world over. I did write “boating lake” earlier, with a half good reason. there are plans to implement the possibility of more boats on the lake in late ‘08, but i wouldn’t hold your breath.

Unfortunately, as if to coincide with the building work in the centre for the capital of culture, the park is being renovated after years of neglect. The lakes are being drained and many trees are being cut down and new ones replanted. Most of th big statues and monuments are also being renovated, so instead visitors get the opportunity to view contemporary builders fences. This doesn’t disturb much of the park at any one time though. but be warned.

Sefton Park is the most relaxed, leafy and serene part of Liverpool. The park is over 600 acres in size and was designed by the French architect, Édouard André in the mid-19th century.

It has everything you could want from a park and is somewhat reminiscent of Hyde Park in London. In fact, Sefton Park was actually nicknamed the "Hyde Park" of the north! Apparently that was because of the wide horse paths that run right around the park that are now used by joggers.

As well as lots of trees and greenery, there is a lovely lake where it's not uncommon to see locals fishing. Just off this lake is a huge field of daffodils that is quite striking in Spring.

There is also a wonderful palm-house situated in the middle of the park which can be hired for weddings and other special occasions - it really does provide a stunning back-drop!

The fields are often used for football matches and it's not uncommon for the park to host fireworks and bonfires around November 5th.

If you get peckish or thirsty, just off Sefton Park is Liverpool's bohemian area of Lark Lane. And if you want a bit of Beatles culture, Penny Lane is not far!
