Une belle piece de France en Angleterre.

Gerry and I popped in here for the first time this evening (we didn’t want to queue for Edamame) and we were very impressed, especially as this is part of a chain!

I think we got lucky getting in without a reservation - we saw the somewhat fearsome maitre d’ turn down several less fortunate couples!

As for the food, Gerry and I were both pretty impressed. Gerry started with the Asparagus, topped with parmesan, poached egg and hollandaise, and it was a really lovely dish (though I would have preferred it without the parmesan. I went for Moules Marinieres which was excellent, and the first time I’ve ever had fennel in a Mariniere, but it worked well.

Mains-wise, G went traditional with the Duck a l’orange (excellent and the duck nice and pink) and I tried the Pork in Mustard which was equally good, sitting atop red cabbage and bacon.

A bowl of frites went down well with both dishes!

I think the only negatives for me were the slightly slow service (not in terms of the food, but in getting extra drinks and paying the bill etc), and as already mentioned the Maitre d’, who is pretty fearsome and seemed quite abrupt, though not rude.

Overall though, at £55 including drinks, coffee and service, this is a pretty good value place and certainly one we’d go to again - though perhaps we’ll book next time!

This is one of my favourites in Oxford, a real little gem on one of Oxford's nicest streets, Little Clarendon Street. Excellent food, everything here is spot on. I've been a few times with different groups of people and none of them have had a bad word to say.

I love the starters here, all just enough for a taste of something special without being too filling or stodgy. The main courses are always very subtle and full of flavour without being overbearing. I like their chicken dishes in particular and I'm told they do good Moules too. A fantastic wine list, I've had a few bottles from here and they've all been excellent - clearly carefully chosen to match the food.

The service is excellent (although last time I was there it did take some time to get the bill, obviously they were hoping we'd have another drink!). The atmosphere is excellent too, good for dates, family meals and a night out with friends.

I love Pierre Victoire - I'm always surprised how cheap it is, especially for lunch. I think it's part of a chain but you'd never know it. The friendly staff seem to be all French and the atmosphere is typical casual French bistro with rough wooden furniture and candles etc. The food is not fancy but always reliably good - the mussels always a good bet and their reasonably priced steak is hard to beat. It's always busy though - probably best to book.

Pierre Victoire is surprisingly good for a chain restaurant and doesn't have the air of a generic corporation about it. The staff seem genuinely French and are polite, although they seated us next to the till despite there being lots of other seats. The paintings on the wall are full of obscure French words and entertaining images of food, which is tasteful and thought-provoking, and the atmosphere is nice, with a good rumble of conversation, but not excessive amounts of noise. The food is good and quite filling, and although not the cheapest, it is enjoyable. Try not to fill up on bread at the start! It's not entirely traditionally French, but it tries, and it's well-cooked. And when you've finished eating you can walk down the fairy-light lit Little Clarendon Street and feel warm and fuzzy.
