Frankenstein, Mühltal

Castle Frankenstein offers multiple attractions - the ruin (that allegedly inspired the British author Mary Shelley 1814 to her well-known novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus), a nice little wedding chapel, a restaurant and cafe and last but not least a unique panorama view well up to the Frankfurt region in the north and similarily distant in the other directions.

Access to the ruin is free of charge and there is plenty of free parking at the end of the winding forest road leading to castle Frankenstein.

The forest offers lots of nice walks and you can treat yourself to a nice cuppa on the panorama terrace after having explored the area. In bad weather you can enjoy the same view through large windows in the restaurant.

The food I’ve sampled so far (lunch and tea) weren’t spectacular, but enjoyable and the prices are absolutely ok for this kind of location.

At halloween the castles becomes a roaming ground for devils, demons and other creatures of the netherworld. For a number of weekends (at least one before and one after halloween) there are a number of special events on the castle (typically for guests 16 and older) and a spooky hour for smaller kids on sunday afternoon. Check the website for details. During these events the access road is closed and a free shuttle bus brings visitors up an down.
