Latest news, gig listings and directions to the venues, all in one place, always up to date.
The Wedgewood Rooms is a fantastic venue to see bands perform. It is only a small venue which means that you can get close to the band performing. However due to its small size few large bands play there. It is a good place for watching up and coming bands who could be the next big thing. The Wedgewood Rooms also has comedy nights which attract big names. All in all a good venue with reasonable ticket prices.
The 'Wedge’ as it is locally known is a great little music venue. Many well known bands have played at the Wedge at some point or other!
It has excellent sound quality and good lighting rig. They also charge fair prices to see good bands.
This is however overshadowed a bit for me by the ridiculous queues that can build up at the bar, the prices when you get there (not cheap), and the distinct lack of cleanliness in the toilets.
Another disappointment is the lack of parking nearby, but that is unfortunately situational.
All in all a great little venue, but needs a few tweaks!
This is a small but compact gig venue located in Southsea. It is by far the best gig venue in the Portsmouth area.
Many bands play here from big to small including local bands. The music here is quite eclectic and there is always something on for everyone throughout the month.
It was good to see this venue involved in the Love Albert Road Day this year where the venue had live acts throughout the day which you could come and go as you pleased for free. This was a great opportunity to hear some little known bands and enjoy some interesting music.
I love the Wedgewod rooms for the events it holds, but not for the location itself, as it’s not exactly attractively decorated!
They have a really wide range of music and comedy events each and every month, and if you can’t find something you like then it’s probably best that you don’t leave the house anyway!!!!
Their website has all their listings and you can purchase tickets online (it’s the easiest and quickest option).
The Wedgewood rooms is easy to get to by bus though if driving you need to allow time to find a side street to park in.
It isn’t a huge venue but holds a good crowd.
This a great small venue and I’ve seen so many bands there over the years. Many bands played here when they were first starting out including Muse and Oasis. I’ve been lucky enough to see loads of bands and comics over the years - the Levellers, Ash, Ed Byrne, Terrorvision and Jeff Green.
It also hosts club nights, including Chaos on alternate Saturdays, which has been running for years and is a great Indie / alternative night.
The downside is that there is virtually no parking nearby unless you’re very lucky and find a space in one of the residential streets - and it is a fair walk from the train station.
But…. it is one of the best small venues I’ve been to!
This is a great “little” alternative venue. Take a chance and book early for the up and coming bands - many a time this place has hosted gigs of those who’ve gone on to be much more well known. They also host a comedy club which is great fun and a very different experience to Jongleurs for instance. The seating maybe somewhat reminiscent of school but the atmosphere can be hard to beat. The comperes are often very good.
Its not pretty but it does exactly what it says on the tin.
I lose count of the amount of bands i’ve seen at the wedge, it’s a great way to see new bands on the way up and older bands years after they were 'hot’
I saw ocean colour scene there not too long ago and they were awesome!
The venue is fairly intimate, standing room only with a small stage and separate (though small) bar area. Don’t expect luxury but for the price you pay this place is amazing.
Every city has a place like this. great place to see bands I definitely recommend it!
The Wedge, you gotta love it.
This is the place that all local bands aspire to perform at. This is a well established venue playing host to local, national and international acts. Not restricted to only music, it is also well know as a comedy venue.
Now, the place has it’s drawbacks: crap parking (as is the case with most entertainment/pubs in the city who don’t have customer parking, and the drinks are a tad on the pricey side, plus the toilets do get a bit ripe on a busy night, not that this is a real problem for us blokes, but you ladies, I know would prefer to hover in and hover out.
It is a good sized venue and standing is the order of the day (I prefer this), but there are some who 2 to 3 hours standin’ would be a kind of torture.
There are a lot of things that the Wedge could and maybe should try to improve, but, at the end of the day it is a pretty-fine venue and the city would be a poorer place without it.
Always worth takin’ a look at what/who is performing.
Top venue. Great bands and comedy. Friendly staff. A gem. Onyl downside is queing for a fag/smirt on the pavement (one-in-one-out).
The Wedgewood Rooms is like the Portsmouth Pyramid Centre's younger brother. But it plays this to its advantage, supporting not only popular acts from around the world, but hosting local, up and coming bands in the immediate area. The venue itself is nothing impressive, but it isn't bad either, and the variety of events more than makes up for the size of the place.
