St. Nikolai memorial stands there to remind of the victims of war and persecution in 1933 - 1945.

Since 1 September 2005, an elevator has taken visitors to a 75.3 metre-high platform inside the spire to enjoy history panels and a panoramic view over Hamburg and in particular the nearby Speicherstadt (City of Warehouses).

Definitely a place to visit while in Hamburg, so sad the devastation WWII had on the city. The ruins stand as a testament to all those that died both in Germany and around the world. Seeing the photographs and reading about the devastation whilst in such a landmark building is quite poignant. Taking up what Sooffietje says it’s quite interesting to be able to sit these images alongside such breathtaking views of 'new’ Hamburg.

The St. Nikolai tower is my favourite piece of architecture in Hamburg.

Once upon a time it held the position of "tallest building in the world" and it's still the second-tallest in Hamburg. Unfortunately the church that was once attached to it is long since gone. It was damaged in WWII, but not catastrophically. The locals just didn't feel like fixing it, and in fact pulled it down! Criminal.

The St. Nikolai tower is absolute worth visiting if you want to learn more about Hamburg´s history and enjoy it´s beautiful architecture.

In front of the St. Nikolai you can find some really interesting art/monuments, relating to the war and it´s remembrance.

For a lousy 3 euros you take the elevator, to the height of 76meters. From here, a fantastic, breathtaking view over Hamburg´s harbour and city centre welcomes you.
Interesting photos are showed with stories about the war; it´s bombings and what was left of Hamburg. Sad to see how many buildings had been distroyed..but great to compare these pictures to the view of modern Hamburg.
Well, I think they did a great job!
