This place is total rock and roll, all AC/DC and Judas Priest, with The Stranglers thrown in for good measure. But for all its dated feel, it does have a certain brash and loud charm. Don’t expect great comfort, but it’s a good mix of people.

My only criticism would be that it’s a tad on the expensive side, and don’t ask for a cocktail unless you like your spirits lying on top of one another like an oil slick on the sea!

A rock bar, as rock bars should be. None of the new-fandangled glitzy mirrored wall type bars (surely that’s SO un-rock’n’roll). But hard wooden floors, a little bit dingy and worn out, a juke box and an unpretentious clientele is what gives this pub its character.

The Black Bull is open until 1pm (as most pubs are in the area), and gets rather busy at the weekend. I do quite like popping in for a more quiet pint during the week though too.

Great Rock bar, with regular clientelle. This bar is a welcome break from the surrounding bars and the Omni Centre with its generic pubs and generic customers. This is a great bar, with nice staff, a fantastic jukebox and plenty of seats. Busy on a weekend, it gets supremely toasty inside, but the atmosphere is fun, there is a pool table and the drinks are average Edinburgh prices.

The Black Bull lies on the corner of Leith Street and Calton Road, and is quite easy to miss if one is walking away from Princes Street towards Leith Walk.

Once you walk down the short but steep flight of steps, under the pubs sign, and into the pub itself, you will be greeted by what appears to be a long corridor, branching off into a seating area on your left and with a bar on your right.

The Jukebox is filled with rock and punk classics from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and the atmosphere has a certain dingy rock and roll feel to it, with almost all customers sporting band logos and/or leather jackets and the walls draped in articles and photos devoted to classic rock.

The only downside of this pub would have to be the steep drink prices. At £3 a pint, this is not the kind of place that one can go to to get lashed. But if its a couple of beer, a nice time with your friends, and good rock music, you're after, then this is without a doubt your best bet.
