We have been on this site since late last year and find john and ian very helpful and friendly nothing is too much trouble and they always have time to stop and say hello, my caravan was very reasonable and the rent is twice yearly a great site for families and the views around there are stunning.Other caravaners on here are very friendly and its not a case of  keeping up with the jones, great site

We have recently bought a caravan on this site and during the 5 weeks we have been there, John Cullen and his friend, Ian, have been working non stop to get the site in top shape ready for this season.
I find this place extremely relaxing, friendly, reasonably priced and a lovely place to be for peace and quiet.
It has outstanding views across the valleys, plenty of space to excercise your dog (if you have one) and the caravans have a good space between each one.
John Cullen and his family have been exceptionally helpful and friendly.  They have not tried to rip us off, nor do they overcharge for gas and electricity.  The electric has never gone off, nor the gas, and the water is lovely.
I cannot believe what some people have said on this website about Pen-y-Wern.  I would recommend it to anyone, in fact, I have.
If you want a site that has all singing, all dancing facilities, then go and look elsewhere,  but be prepared to pay the price.  If you want a nice peaceful break from whatever else you do in life, then come to Pen-y-Wern.
When we looked at the vans John had for sale, every one was a good price, every one came with site fees paid until October, and John was  completely honest with us.  We do not need to update the caravan unless we want to.  We have been allowed to "corden off" our own little garden space so that I can let my dogs out in the middle of the night without having to go out in the cold in my pyjamas to walk them, we can park our car right outside our van and have found nothing wrong with the bin area.
All in all, I am absolutely thrilled with Pen-y-Wern, John Cullen and his family, even the chickens and guinea fowl, and cannot wait to get back every time we come home for the post and pills!!

Well i totally disagree with what ‘takenotice’ is saying here,‘A badly managed, money grabbing site’?? Not in my opinion and not the opinion of many i now know on the site. Yes, improvements can be made there, but isnt the whole country in need of improvement ??
Me and my family have owned a caravan on PenYWern holiday park for the last 4 years and we absolutely love it there .
Before being at penywern we had a caravan on a high profile site ‘not mentioning any names’ in north wales where i paid £15,000 for a 1998 static caravan. Ground fees for the season were £4000. Two years after buying that caravan in north wales we was told by the owners that we had to upgrade the caravan at a cost of nearly £10,000 or we had the choice of taking the caravan off the site at a huge price or we sold it back to them for £4000. We had no choice but to sell it back to them for £4000. With this money plus an extra £1500 on top i bought exactly the same caravan at penywern , we are still in the same van and love it plus the owner said we wont have to upgrade as long as its kept tidy, Thats GREAT !! Plus its a nicer site than the one in north wales.
At penywern we pay £2180 per year site fees, £31 for a gas bottle wich lasts us ages and a £20 electric card will also last us very well compared to being at home. Our water has always been fine there, only once our electric stopped because we forget to top up with an electric card LOL !!
Weve had a great time at the club singing in the kareoke , the food is good, A pint is £2.60 so i cant grumble with that and its always been open whilst weve been there.
The swimming pool is open throughout the summertime ,BUT it wasnt heated this season but ive been told by the owner that there is a new boiler fitted so it will be heated again this year !! YIPPY!!!!
As for selling our caravan, The owner told me he would give me the same as what i paid for it 4 years ago if i upgraded, yes there is a £1500 commission fee if we sold private and wanted to leave, but atleast we CAN sell it private unlike the site we were on before, And i totally understand this fee from the owner, Otherwise everybody would be buying and selling their caravans on penywern with no control for the site owner whatsoever.
But we dont want to sell our caravan on penywern because we love the caravan and love the site.
Weve been told by the owner that a new shop and coffe shop is opening in march and the fishing pond has been revamped!!
I cant wait to get back there in march !!!
Yes we did ourself a favour, we thaught once, and bought a caravan on Pen-Y-Wern Holiday Park.

I’ve read your comments with great interest, Sooty, and if that is your honest opinion of this site then I can’t dispute it. Unfortunately, it isn’t mine and, therefore, does not negate my previous comments. Just because my experience wasn’t the same as yours does not mean it didn’t happen.

Bearing that in mind, perhaps you will address two of my points that you chose to completely ignore.

Firstly, do you agree that disabled and elderly people, who are unable to negotiate stairs, cannot use the bar and restaurant, because it is reached by going down a very steep flight of steps. If you do not agree, then please tell me your solution as I shall be pleased to hear it – as will anyone else reading this review.

Secondly, since we are into honesty, give me your opinion of the state of the bins in the rubbish disposal area. Your HONEST opinion, Sooty, and not how it appears through your seemingly rose-coloured spectacles !

I hope that you and your family continue enjoying your breaks at Pen y Wern and that you don’t have any cause for disillusionment.

    Happy Easter, Sooty.

  • takenotice, 6 April 2012:

While we are at it, Sooty. When you come up with a solution to access the bar/restaurant, turn your thoughts to enabling the elderly/disabled make use of the swimming pool – via steep, broken slab steps and wobby railings !! I don’t think the "state of the country " has anything to do with this. This is safety maintenance – not improvement.

    Hi takenotice.

Yes thankyou, we are having a lovely easter weekend its just a shame we had to come home today from a couple of nights at Pen-y-Wern.

Ok im going to keep this on a factual basis as i dont want to be draged into a handbag social website war.

You say that the rubbish bins area is a total mess with rubbish everywhere. I put my rubbish bag in the rubbish bins area at Penywern this morning before we left and this area was clean and tidy with pleanty of room in the bins for rubbish. The fence panels around the bins area has been replaced over the winter period so now the whole area looks good !

You say that the steps that runs past the pool up to the house are steep with broken slabs and a wobbly hand rail. I walked up them last night on my way to the club house and they seemed perfectly fine to me with no broken steps, the handrail is not wobbly and the steps are not steep !

You say that the elderly and disabled cannot access the swimming pool because of the steps. They dont need to use the steps as they can access the pool by walking or wheeling or be driven up the newly re-surfaced tarmaced road which leads up to the pool . Ok there are 3 steps to get up before actually reaching the pool side but im sure there would be someone available by the pool to help the elderly or disabled get up these 3 small steps to the pool .

Yes you are right when stating there is no wheelchair access to the bar but that doesnt necessarily mean no access for the elderly as i see elderly people having food and drinks down there. I depends on if they can walk down and up one flight of steel steps with a steel handrail. Anyhow i have never seen the site advertising the clubhouse as being wheelchair accessible, But the park itself is wheelchair friendly with tarmaced roads and street lighting.

So ‘takenotice’ i hope i have answered your issues raised, as what i have statad here today are facts and if you dont believe me then go to Pen-y-Wern and see for yourself.

Yes i agree that the place was badly managed a coulple of years ago after the owner moved to another site and got in a poor manager but ive had no complaints as i had such a good deal on my caravan, and now there is a new manager whose doing a great job on revamping the place , now there are lots of new faces and happy people on the site !

I wont be commenting anymore on this website as it is really not my ‘cup of tea’

‘takenotice’ i dont wear rosy spectacles, This big bunch of sour grapes you have i think you need to chuck in the bin.

    Happy easter to you aswell.

    Hello Take Notice,

I take on board everything that you say, and note your wish to make no further comment, but I would make one point.Club Membership is a compulsory payment. Denying access to wheelchair users and the disabled is in strict contravention of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995." It is unlawful for the provider of services to discriminate against a disabled person in failing to comply with any duty imposed upon him by Section 21 of the Act, in circumstances in which the effect of that failure is to make it impossible or unreasonably difficult for the disabled person to make use of any such services."This would apply whether or not there is a payment involved. The fact that the clubhouse is not advertised as being wheelchair accessible has no bearing on the matter whatsoever. As it is your desire to draw an end to this discussion. I will say goodbye and send you best wishes.

I know of loads of pubs, clubs, restraunts, caffe’s in Chester and Aberystwyth and probably every other town and city in this country that have steps going up or down to access them , this has never crossed my mind before, shocking ! I will say goodbye, All the best.

Everything that Adado says in his review is true. I, too, have had experience of this badly managed, money grabbing site. The people in charge have no consideration or concern for the caravan owners.
Both the gas and the electricity are extremely expensive. The electricity is often turned off without any warning or explanation, as is the water which sometimes comes from a well, and not the mains. When the supply reaches the bottom of the storage tank, you are treated to the disgusting experience of muddy, jet black water pouring from the taps, again without any warning…. wonderful if you just happen to be mid-shower at the time. No effort is ever made to explain the situation.
The rubbish bins are continually left to overflow before being only partly emptied, resulting in flies and really stinking.
There are many aspects of this site that are dangerously in need of repair and maintenance – for instance, the steps and railing leading to the swimming pool. Neither the pool, which is rarely heated or open, nor the bar/restaurant, is accessible to the disabled or anyone having difficulty with stairs.
When it comes to selling a caravan, one is obliged to give the site owner first refusal, receiving a derisory offer bearing no relation to the actual value of the van. If eventually selling privately, a minimum of £1500 commission must be paid to the site owner. There is also an exorbitant charge for taking a caravan off the site.
Do yourself a favour. Think twice.
