Despite walking past this place for the past 17 years I’d never, until last night, stepped through it’s front doors.
A friend invited us to the opening night of a photo exhibition there so a good opportunity to check the place out was presented to us. With a name like ‘Green Room’ you can kind of guess the ‘aroma’ and clientèle of the place (which is more obvious when you look inside when passing by). Yup, it’s a fairly arty place in which to imbibe your favourite tipple.
Although perhaps not the most widest choice of drinks they still stock some decent premium and fruity ales (which I adore, just not in large quantities).
It is in fact more than a cafe/bar - a contemporary arts space for emerging talents in creative Manchester. Set over two floors in a converted Victorian rail arch (one of the few original conversions left on Whitworth street) it’s a nice space to take in exhibitions whilst quaffing a jug of pleasant nectar.
Within the complex you’ll find workspace, exhibition space and a mezzanine space for audio events (as an example).
Anyway, I’d urge you to go look at the current exhibition by Jane Samuels entitled: ‘The Abandoned Buildings Project’, quite unsettling photographs captured within abandoned asylums and presented terrifically in three dimensional montages (on for the next three weeks).
Art and Ale mix very well.
