Gourmet Burger Kitchen is a New Zealand owned chain of burger restaurants that does what it says on the tin. The burgers are top quality, well cooked, tasty and filling. It is comparable to Giraffe or other similar cafes. They also do good milkshakes.

The vegetarian options are somewhat limiting, however you can ask for your burger without any bread.

They can also cater for large groups unlike some places in Richmond (we had 10 people today with no problems in the spped of the food arriving).

Service can be a bit hit and miss but you are there for the food.

Have recently been to the new Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) restaurant in Leeds, and can safely say that I will NOT be returning again!

Firstly, any eating house that makes you wait to be shown to your table, then you have to get up from your table, go to the counter, order your food in person and pay at the same time, ‘O’ and don’t forget to collect your knife and fork on the way back to your inadequate table and chair, should not be called a restaurant!!! Even places like Pizza Hut and MacDonald’s have far better service and comfort and don’t call themselves restaurants.

Secondly, despite the large range of burgers you cannot specify how they are cooked, instead you are told at the time of purchase that it will be cooked ‘Well done’ or like the majority of them they will be ‘Medium’. This actually means that it will be slightly tanned on the outside but extremely rare in the middle. The meat is as red as the relish that they try to disguise it with.

Thirdly, the service is despicable no customer care at all. No follow up from staff after the food has been delivered, drinks served without glasses unless specially requested. Also, the interior is none descript and absolutely no atmosphere. We were half expecting to have to scrap our plates clean and stack them neatly before leaving!

THIS IS DEFINITELY A NO FRILLS EXPERIENCE WITH OVER PRICED FOOD & DRINKS AND NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. IF YOU LIKE BURGERS AND WELL COOKED FOOD THEN DON’T EAT HERE!

I think they do a pretty good job here. My favourite burger is definitely the classic bacon and cheese with an egg on it. The perfect hangover cure. If you're not hungover, i'd recommend the Cajun, Satay or blue cheese burgers. I'm always tempted to try the Chorizo burger, but i never have the balls. Service in here is always quick and friendly. The only thing i would say is that i think the burgers are too expensive. £9 is quite alot for a burger.....

I've been to about three GBK's but mostly to the one in Richmond as it's nearest to where I live. The burgers are simply enormous and very good. They come in a "tower" held together with a large "cocktail stick".

An unusual selection of toppings like ginger sauce, mango sauce, beetroot. Plus if you're a veggie you can have ones with giant mushrooms. Also chicken burgers too.

If there are two of you, I'd really advice you NOT to have two portions of chips with it as the chips are cut very large and with a burger almost the size of small child you'd need a Herculean appetite to eat one with a whole bowl of chips to yourself. One between two is enough.

The milkshakes are also pretty filling - but as there's not much else in the way of "dessert" have one if you have a sweet tooth.

"Gourmet" also means gourmet in price but considering how large they are, I think they are good value for money.

A lot of people rate this burger chain on the basis that it does really good, 'gourmet' burgers. In reality, I think the hype is based on the comparison with the competition rather than any kind of absolute value. It's not difficult to look good when your competition is the likes of McDonald's.

I've not been any other GBK so don't know if the Kiwi theme is peculiar to the Richmond branch, but there's a distinct New Zealand influence to the more exotic choices on the menu.

Mind you, I wouldn't bother with anything other than the bog standard burger/cheeseburger. The other concoctions come across as gimmicks, more than considered combinations of ingredients. To be fair, the 'normal' burgers are very good, but watch out for the £1.50 charge if you want any sort of sauce to go with your burger.
