Kalahari Moon aka Southern African Shop
There are a host of these stores all over the UK, set up to provide expats with all those much missed South African goodies not stocked in the local supermarkets. You can't miss Kalahari Moon, painted yellow with its bright SA flag, familiar SA accent, supply of free SA publications outside, you are drawn inside by the familiar.
Most South Africans I know, have that one thing they crave, ranging from Biltong (dried raw meat), Ouma's rusks, borewors (sausage for a braai), Castle lager, Windhoek lager, Hansa Pilsner, Savannah Dry, Mainstay Cane, Five Roses tea, peppermint crisp (chocolate bar), Tempo (chocolate bar), Ghost Pops (crisps), Mrs Balls Chutney (all flavours, not just the one variety now sold in Sainsburys), Aromat spice, brown onion soup mix, cream style sweet corn, steers sauce, gem squash, etc. These and more are all available at this store. It is welcoming and friendly as you invariably land up chatting to someone you have never met but have an instant connection.
But there is no reason why locals shouldn't visit Kalahari Moon in St Nicholas Market to try out some of the favourite SA things that have made it necessary to open a store and import them to the UK.
