4 reviews of The Ridge Hotel in English
Upon arrival for a stag-do myself and our 11 others were asked to provide a £30 deposit or bond that would be returned when checking out - this didnt raise any eyebrows as we all knew we are decent chaps and although on a stag weekend would still remain relativley responsible especially to someone who was putting us ups property. We werent too impressed when checking in, the couple running the 'hotel' were fine and welcomed us but the rooms were very small and basic, relativley clean but you couldnt see the floor as they had jammed 4 beds in there meaning getting ready was chaos and we had to dress/undress on our beds. We all agreed this wasnt the Ritz but laughed it off and carried on with our weekend. Now, for the frustrating and completley out of line part. During our first nights return we merrily got in around the same time and admittedley were a little loud (no-one was sharing hotel and as noted its a stag-do!)The landlord came upstairs - I guess to warn us that we may be a little over-excited but discovered the fire alarm box was on the floor to which fair enough he got upset about. No-one in our group did this on purpose (I myself nearly caught it and it pertrudes about 3 inches out the wall as you leave either of the two ridiculously tiny rooms. Most of these boxes are sunk in the wall to prevent this. Long story short - Landlord makes up some story how he has to re-set and call a engineer from Exeter (?) and keeps our £360. I doubt they get much business and saw an excellent way of scamming money. Perhaps it was to buy a new jumper? He wore the same filthy red jumper all 3 days we were there morning/evening and during cooking our (admittedley nice) breakfasts, I can also assume that the other comment left is by a friend or family member as this was sub-standard, showers were either way to hot or too cold despite battling them for several minutes, a 'pint' at the bar is £2.50 - not bad? Well yes if its a multi-pack can of Fosters, maybe Im picking straws for what essentially is a B&B but feeling a bit sore from losing out £360 wrongly (I got a quote to fix this when home and was told no more than £110 anyway) Stay here if you want to lose your deposit - I firmly beleive this 'accident' was staged. Good luck! Breathe in its a squash!
was this guy johnsibly staying at the same place???maybe alcohol clouded judgement.
we have stayed at this hotel on two occasions and have found it to be immaculately clean, with lovely food .(good quality not economy) fantastic location and the hosts Molly and Brian were just the best,a really warm friendly welcome and they gave us lots of info on the area.
don't let one bad review put you off.I feel the reviewer's negative comments are totally unjustified. We would certainly recommend a stay here and will be returning in the future.
the Marsh family, Southampton.
Just looked at the review from johnsibly London and was quite surprised to read this .I was staying at the Ridge Hotel with another group and we all found it very welcoming and freindly. It was very clean all the showers and toilets where imaculate and worked perfectly . I did notice the other group had nothing good to say about Newquay and thought they were to up market for the area. But you go to Newquay for one reason to drink, surf and enjoy your self which we did and will be doing next year and the next if the Ridge Hotel has room . ps the breakfast was lovely
We stayed here recently on a stag do. The hotel came as part of a package, so I have no idea how much it actually costs to stay.
In terms of the building, this is probably one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in.
Our 4 person room had a bunk bed and two additional beds, crammed in so tightly that you had to side step between them. We were lucky (!) enough to have an en-suite, which had a slide door which did not shut probably.
The shower started off freezing cold for the first few minutes before, in a mater of seconds, changing to being painfully hot. Dangerously so in fact; I would not want to let a child use this shower.
The other rooms in the hotel share bathrooms, each broken in their own way (toilet impossible to flush, shower hose broken off wall etc.). The place seemed generally dirty.
When we arrived we each had to pay a £30 cash deposit, which was only returned after inspection and waiting around for 45 minutes on departure.
They made a big fuss about how good their English breakfasts were: sadly these fell well below expectations, featuring only the bear minimum of beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and toast (no mushrooms, black pudding, hash browns here!). The ingredients all seemed to be from an economy/value supermarket range, and no-one in our group could stomach the sausages.
They have a pool table in the front longe, and also an outside picnic table. The front of the hotel offers nice sea views. They also have a “licensed” bar (drinks poured from cans but at pub prices).
On a positive note, the staff were genuinely friendly people, and seemed interested in where we were planning to go out, and what activities we had planned during the day (surfing). As such, I think this saved The Ridge from being 1 star - however, if it costs more than about £20 pppn to stay there I would definitely give this place a miss.
