Try Thai, which is the sister restaurant to The East Restaurant, located a few paces along Faulkner Street, serve fantastic food. Anndrea and her staff are very friendly and welcoming. Both restaurants also provide a home delivery service, which is becoming increasingly popular with residents in the City centre. I can certainly recommend Try Thai; whether you eat in or at home!

I was wandering through China town with my girlfriend looking for a place to eat. Most restaurants in China town i find look a little tacky and cheap, so when we stumbled upon the outside menu for Try Thai, my favourite type of food, crammed in the middle of a host of Chinese restaurants, we weren’t expecting much different. Partly because the prices seemed so reasonable.
A short walk up the stairs and i was pleasantly surprised. The interior was stylish and not gaudified by countless religious baubles, the chairs were comfortable and in general things were classier than i expected.
The food was great. We didn’t exactly splurge on the starters (prawn crackers) but were thankful because the main course was huge. I had the vermicelli, which was packed with vegetables and flavours, and the mrs had red curry, which i ate most of because she’s 'a lady’. Adding on a couple bottles of Tsing Tao and our bill was a resounding 23 bones. Not bad. Not bad at all.

1 Hors d’ouers
3 Fish cakes
1 Grilled seafood starter
1 Vermicelli King Prawn salad
1 Pad Wun Sen
1 Thai Red seafood curry
1 Vegetable stir fry
1 Aubergine chilli dish
2 bowls of Jasmine rice
1 Thai coconut Rice
4 Diet cokes
3 English Teas
1 Coffee

and finally, to round off the meal;
chopped banana in a bowl of coconut milk…delicious.

Grand total: £78.80

4 people entered this place hungry, dishevelled and weary from a long, working week - and 4 people left satisfied, reinvigorated and with money left over in their wallets.

I’ve said enough already…I should have surmised it simply - you must come here.

We went to Try Thai last Friday. I’d never been but my partner had. I was very impressed, especially as someone who might normally avoid Thai as I’m not too much of a fan of the red and green curry that most people associate with Thai food.

We started off simply with some Thai prawn crackers. These are more flavoursome than the Chinese variety, and less greasy. We munched on these for only a few minutes before the mains arrived -- Thai cuisine is quick!

For mains, we chose pork Pad Thai and a dish with chicken and vermicelli. Both were served within minutes and were excellently presented. Portions were large and we were glad we didn’t go for much of a starter as there was more than enough to eat in the main course alone. Everything was fresh and there were no signs of any MSG in the dishes!

The staff were friendly and attentive, and able to recommend items off of the menu. Admittedly it was very quiet when we went (early evening). On the way out I made sure a lady perusing the menu outside heard my hearty recommendation!

Prices were very reasonable - meat dishes are between £7.90 and £9.50, fish is £16 and lobster and crab £22.95. As well as the à la carte menu, the restaurant offers banquet-style set menus for between £20 and £30 per person.

The restaurant offers a cocktail menu as well as the usual drinks list; cocktails were around £6.

If you’re in Chinatown and fancy something other than Chinese, then Try Thai is definitely a good choice.

In Manchester, there are a few notable Thai Restaurants, all of which are a good standard, but I have to confess; I have found the best!

Try Thai is in the heart of Chinatown, wedged between two excellent value Chinese restaurants, and quite often, you see people outside perusing the menus, unable to decide. If I had a choice, I would shove them straight into Try Thai.

Depending on what you like and how much spice you can take, choice is not a problem. If you visit before 5pm, the restaurant has to most amazing value menu. You can have one starter, one main and ice cream or coffee (filtered!) for £6.50.

There is a more expensive menu at £9.50 which has more seafood ingredients.

There are 10 choices in each section, so it will cater for you if you are a vegetarian, or if you can't handle spicy food.

Just to let you know how good value it is, I had a steamed mussels on the £6.50 menu as a starter and on the evening menu, that costs £5.95 alone!

I always has the special, and I can tell you they never scrimp of portions, not do they westernize their dishes so they taste like bland curries. This is the real thing - so if you need it toned down a little, say so!
