Good location with lots of amenities nearby. 24 hr Costcutters is right next door, plus a NatWest bank of machines is a 2 minute walk away. Lovely little fruit/veg/flowers stall that sits right outside the station provides you cheap (fresh!) produce on your way home to cook dinner.
Pharmacy & magazine stand located right inside the entrance to the station. Has about 3 Oyster machines, 2 ticket windows and 10 or so barriers. Never TOO busy except in the mornings. Connects Northern & Victoria lines, so is very useful for southern London transport links. Buses go to Brixton, Clapham Junction, Tooting, Streatham and central London from stops outside.

Unfortunately that incident tends to colour everyone's impression of the area, which isn't bad at all.
Opposite the station is the famous Swan pub which is THE pub for tribute bands (Nearvana, The Antarctic Monkeys etc), while if you turn right down Clapham Road you'll find the Circle Bar which is the hangout for Mike Skinner of the Streets who lives nearby.
Very close also is the Priory Arms pub which does one of the best Sunday Dinners in South London.
