great place lovely coffee- so good it gets a bit too busy sometimes!
Best coffee in London, fact.
Really good coffee! I usually try to order their brand , too if its offered in any other restaurant or bar.
My favourite coffee place in covent garden, but I have just discovered dose near the barbican and have to admit that dose is my absolute favourite in London (see my review for dose, too).
However, since I do love shopping and walking around in covent garden, the Monmouth Coffee Company does provide the best quick pick me upin the area!
The shop in Monmouth Street is small, but with a great concept. It's like you're sitting behind the counter, where the staff makes your coffee. Nice furnishings and good atmosphere - and the great smell of their coffee.
London`s best place for coffeeholics, coffee ole :-)
One of the best places in London for coffee.
The best secret kept in town as described made me so curious to go and taste .
I just had a dark hot columbian coffee in Covent Garden' shop, it was crowded and there was no place at the tables to sit up, so a bit in a hurry but that was really the best coffee ever drank in London: silky, good, high character.
It's a shop too, yes, you can buy coffee selected and roasted straight from the Company.
Heartly recommended.
great coffee not the same tasting as at their sister shop in the market, have always managed to get a seat here which is a plus.
They do one thing nicely, i have to say. Kinda place I like.
Home made beans as far as I understand, great coffees. I had a cappucino and for once they give you normal size cappucini (i mean the way you would get it in Italy). Great taste and nicely mixed milk foam.
I'll come back for a drink. Though I bought some expresso beans for my home. I was disappointed. Way too pricey for the quality (£5.50).
It finally dawned on me last week in eight years of living in London I'd never been to Monmouth coffee. Now, that's not to say I haven't had Monmouth coffee, but I'd never been to the Covent Garden cafe where it all began. I think that's a sign that I'm not a real Londoner.
So when I was meeting someone for chats, here seemed like the perfect venue. And actually, it was. I think we chose a bad time - it's tiny and very packed. We found that we'd both been seating in different booths and couldn't see each other. Everyone gets very tucked away and packed in. There's even a little bench for one that looks like a seat on a coach. Not for the claustrophobic!
The coffee is fantastic. Really good. Chats with the staff were nice, they're a friendly bunch even when it's busy. They'd get five stars if only their brownie had been up to scratch. It's wasn't awful, but I've had better and probably wouldn't order one again. They have Chegworth valley juices too and they're yummy.
The best thing about this place is that you'd get a good takeaway coffee. It's rare in London. I like coffee shops, I like the experience of them. I'd get coffee from here and feel like I was still getting that. I love Monmouth coffee, makes me smile :-)

Having tried all of their espresso based drinks and their black coffee (Americano), I have settled on ‘dry cappuccino’ as my beverage of choice, although all their drinks are fantastic and they probably do make the best Americano I’ve had in London. Their house espresso blend has a nice intensity, lots of chocolate on the palate and is very smooth, with an almost velvety mouth feel. To me, it has a lovely rich, round flavor that beautifully balances the sweeter fruity notes with a not-too-harsh streak of acidity. Paired with the dense and luxurious yet butterfly-light foam from Monmouth’s organic milk to balance the just slightly bitter tannic undertones of the espresso, it is a very competent, highly enjoyable espresso drink and does the trick for me every time.
The gist of it: Their drinks are consistently good, and I just like the charm of the place and the impressive knowledge and passion of most of the staff. I mean, they have a wooden bench and table for one person – how quirky and great is that? They also sell a wide range of coffee beans that are painstakingly sourced from around the world and can tell you all about the differences between them. There is normally a long queue if you don’t know what times to go, but I like that it’s on a little street in Covent Garden, that remains slightly funky and has a nice vibe and independent streak about it. I don’t really like the one across from Borough Market as it is too large and too busy.
Yippee - I got to sit in the tiny little booth only big enough for one! Here little Queen Bee enjoyed a thoroughly wonderful double espresso. At £1.30 this has to be the bargain of the decade.
Monmouth roast their own beans and the barista's are passionate about their java so you get to understand why this branch often has queues snaking down Monmouth Street.
Monmouth do sell their beans for home use. Discuss your requirements with the staff and secure a bag of beans that'll suit your taste buds and the type of coffee you intend to make.
Monmouth Coffee started roasting and selling their expertly sourced coffee from 27 Monmouth Street back in 1978. Thirty years later, this teensy coffee shop still provides one of the tastiest ways to wake up and stay alert in Central London. In fact, for my money (£2.30 for a cup of filter coffee to be exact) Monmouth’s single cup filter method might just be the best way to enjoy a cuppa joe in London (they’ve got locations in Borough and Borough Market as well). To make their filter coffee, the Monmouth folks place freshly ground coffee beans into a cone shaped filter positioned just above the top of a mug. Then a little water is poured in with the beans and left to soak for a few seconds of pre-saturation. After that, more water is poured in until the filter is full. The coffee-enriched water seeps through the filter and drips gradually into the mug below, resulting in a ultra-rich coffee that’s as full of flavour as I reckon a cup of coffee can ever be! Of course, Monmouth also sells a full range of top notch espressos, cappuccinos et al as well as pastries and cakes from Villandry and Paul (I’ve tried the croissants – they’re good!). In the winter, chocolate from Pralus and truffles from Sally Clarke are available too. And, if you’re so enamoured with their filter dripped coffee, Monmouth also sells the supplies, such as filter cones and papers, enabling you to make single cup filter coffee at home. As pleasant as brewing up a cup at home may be, I think making time for an in-shop sip at this Monmouth Street institution is the ideal way to enjoy their coffe. The wooden walled seating area is cosy to the point of being almost claustrophobic. Indeed, long-legged customers should probably consider sitting outside on the coffee shop’s bench. Celebrity spotting gawkers might want to keep this outdoor seating in mind too. I’ve seen Keanu Reeves and other stars going in and out of the Covent Garden Hotel just across the street.
This was by far, the best cappuccino I had in London recently. I went to a couple of places loved by my brother - Foyles, Tinderbox, but above all, this coffee shop made me an exquisite cup.
There was latte art, the coffee was not bitter, the milk was thick and creamy, and it didn’t leave me shaking afterwards. Absolutely beautiful!
I’ve been a big fan of Monmouth Coffee for a few years now, and it always makes me smile to walk by and take a big sniff of all the aromatic loveliness that pours our of their Covent Garden shop.
Having recently got interested in trying out different flavours of coffee I wanted to buy some beans to grind at home myself, so popped in to the shop on a Friday afternoon. It was pretty busy in there so I wasn’t sure how available staff would be to talk me through my options - to my surprise the girl who was serving me dropped everything to prepare a tasting for me!
She brewed up four different types of coffee so I could choose based on actual flavour rather than just guesswork (that was my Plan A) and I proceeded to get high on shots of caffeine before selecting a very fine Ghanian variety to take home. Along with my brown paper bag of beans came a sheet giving some background on all the currently stocked coffee, and I buzzed out of there feeling happy, cared for and somewhat giddy.
I can’t praise Monmouth enough for a wonderful customer experience, though I’m afraid I might have to turn in to a caffeine fiend just so I can keep going back and buying stuff from them.
This is a quaint little coffee shop near Covent Garden, and it is really easy to miss if you are not looking for it!
It is mainly a coffee retailing shop, where they have big bins of the absolutely best quality coffee for sale. However, they have a small cafe section at the back to sit and enjoy some of their coffees.
Sitting space is limited, and was very full even though I was there on a Friday afternoon. You might have to share a table with others.
The coffee was really good; I had a latte and then an ice coffee, and both were full of flavour. However, I won’t go so far as to describe it as mind-blowing… but it is a good place for a quick caffeine boost and at very reasonable prices too given the reputation.
Busy all the time and really really good for all coffee based drinks, as others have mentioned. I also buy coffee beans here for special occasions, which you buy by a weight. The will give you advice on which beans to buy and then grind them for you if you ask. The coffee is very expensive, but also very good and I think worth every penny.
This is also the only coffee shop that i sometimes journey to just to have a coffee, rather than going there when I’m in the area. Its that good- you have to go!
