This transplant from the Black Forest is a lively and welcoming pub with Southern German food. Try the Käsespätzle – delicious noodles baked with cheese, Maultaschen (like ravioli), crispy Schnitzel, or pizza-like Flammkuchen with bits of bacon and sour cream, all washed down with traditional and tasty Rothaus beer. A large tile stove makes for a cozy atmosphere, while mounted antlers and other quirky paraphernalia peer down from the walls. It’s a popular Mitte watering hole - best to book ahead to ensure a table.

In contrast to Prenzlauer Berg you can still feel like a Swabian in the city centre.
Delicious Tannenzäpfle from Rothauspils, the last state brewery in Germany, and meals from the Black Forest can be enjoyed in a comfortable atmosphere. In the summer the outside area is suitable for soaking up the sun.
Always a pleasure!

If you manage to get in, this is a very nice place. But often there are no seats left, neither in the cosy pub room nor at the tables outside. This speaks for itself - excellent cuisine (real swabian specialties), good beer (Rothaus) and usually a pleasant atmosphere with agreeable people. Many of the guests drop in from visiting the galleries in the area. Very recommendable.

Good german resturant, receipes from Swabia/Black Forest (Maultaschen, Spätzle etc.).
Good taste, good beer, good prices.
highs: taste, beer
lows: a bit crowded at night
My favourite: Vegetarische Maultaschen mit Ei und Salat, Kaiserschmarrn (sort of a scramble pancake with apple slices, cranberry sauce, caramellised almonds and a bit of spirit)

Having lived on a diet of meat, meat, and more meat for a week in Berlin, I ended up ordering a simple mixed salad at this small but perfectly formed place in the heart of Berlin. This could have been a huge mistake in many places, but the salad was nicely dressed and accompanied by a large basket of various breads. Yum.

Since I’ve only been living in Berlin for three months I’m still investigating Berlin’s restaurants trying to find favourites in the different styles of cuisine on offer, and Berlin has numerous to offer. Last night’s experiment was German, and I headed to Schwarzwaldstuben just off Oranienburger Staße. Very much a bar come restaurant the place was very busy on this Tuesday evening so I guess it may be packed at the weekend.
The menu arrived in German with English translation which is welcome for this Auslander still trying to improve his German. The waitress was very friendly and kindly informed me “das ist zu viel” when I over ordered. Despite my large appetite I (thankfully) listened to her and changed my starter to their mixed started, which offered me the proposition of a variety of tastes, just what I should have ordered in the first place. I followed this with a Schweinschnitzel (breaded pork escalope) and Bratkartoffeln (roasted potatoes with onions). Both dishes were extremely tasty and fortunately the restaurant wasn’t too smoky so I was able to enjoy their taste to the full. At €21 for the meal, plus vodka and bitter lemon, the meal wasn’t cheap by Berlin standards. However the food and the venue were more than good enough to make me want to go back and try venison goulash that I almost ordered.

I went with some friends last night. I was impressed with everything. The portions are very large as I couldn’t finish my plate. The service was friendly, etc. I highly recommend this restaurant.
