Surprisingly, perhaps, Venice isn't renowned as the easiest place in Italy to find great tasting food. If that's what you're after rather than tourist-geared fare, you need look no further...

This family-run restaurant is so friendly and welcoming, from the moment you walk in, no matter how busy (and it is extremely popular with the locals and visitors alike).

If you want a quick snack and a drink, simply stand at the bar and point and smile at whatever takes your fancy (perhaps even the waiter - just joking...) They will appreciate your effort and try to understand, however basic your Italian conversation.

The food is true to its origins and very regional. Prosecco is typically the bar drink (ombra) of choice to accompany your snacks (cicchetti). The salt cod is fabulous. If you're unsure of what else to try they will offer suggestions and tastes.

For something more substantial, don't hesitate to go for the Pasta e Fagioli (pasta and bean soup). This regional northern Italian fare is thick, warming, heartily delicious and ideal if you are exploring Venice out-of-season in the cold winter months. Even if you're pretty hungry, you'll probably be satisfied with that and the good local bread, perhaps followed by a light dessert. Don't miss the local speciality of sgroppino (lemon sorbet, vodka and prosecco) - squisito!
