In Soho, Satsuma offers a large selection of great quality Japanese food and sushi at a fairly reasonable price. Normaly i go there for the sushi, is fresh and for the price is not expensive for london compared to similar places. Is not a tradicional Japonese japones…but i recomend for the sushi. :) I tried the bento box, they ar not bad…i can said is also good, but for me Sushi RULES!!

A great Restaurant, great efficient friendly service, consistently good, well priced food, similar but more intimate than Wagamama, their Katsu Curry is much better here! I have been a customer here for around eight years and have yet to be disappointed!
It will remind you of Wagamama, but the style, food and service here is just as good if not better, and it's very well priced given the size of the portions and location - worth checking out.
I think the food in here is good for what it is. It's not incredible but it's not a slap in the face either. Last night I had a tempura bento and my friend had a satsuma bento box.
Both came with a nice variety of food, all tasted fresh and was all well cooked. It just wasn't massively impressive. The presentation was simple. I did like the sushi rolls that came with my dinner though and it's definitely given me the desire to give salmon skin rolls a second chance once again.
Japanese places like these need to do something. Back in the nineties - they were hot but times have moved on and they need to catch up and be a little better, a little different.
These places are becoming boring. The food is just OK - its not a destination for Japanese food when you have so many other real Japanese places on its door step.
I haven't been back here in about 6 years - I remember liking thier bento boxes a lot but I suspect I won't be coming back any time soon - unless someone forces me to go there and I can't convince them to go to another place. It'll do.
filipeventura I think they are refurbishing the space now. Maybe they came with news. But like you said the food is OK…and for the price you pay is a good choice.

Is it fair to review a Japanese restaurant when I don't really like Japanese food? Probably not. But despite my protests, I found myself here last night. And well, it wasn't so bad. I enjoyed my meal. But then, I was hungry and in good company.
The menu is big enough so you don't have to stick to sushi, and the portions are pretty generous. But there's nothing that stands out about this place. It's just... better than Wagamama. That's not so much of a compliment, more of an observation. It's not exactly groundbreaking, but if you're hungry, in a rush and someone drags you here, you'll leave full up. The katsu curry I had was OK, but doesn't katsu curry always taste like chip shop curry sauce? It can't just be me...
It's not going to be my choice to come here, and I can't see my coming back, but it's good to try new places, right? Even if they're pretty forgettable.
As a healthy alternative to Wagamama, Satsuma rocks, but since the management change the place has definitely gone down hill. Expensive for what it is and no longer a place I love to go so much.
Good spot similar to Wagamama’s and Taro in style, food, and cost. Great value for money.
Love the chicken teriyaki (comes with small side salad with lovely dressing) and rice, also could happily eat all the starters, so great place to share food. You share tables, but not too crammed in. If you can get a seat in the window upstairs it’s a good place to people-watch, lots of tables downstairs too. Staff attentive and knowledgeable, good size portions and good value for money.
Great place for a quick and reasonably priced meal smack in the middle of Soho. With the downstairs seating they always seem to have capacity.
Although there are communal tables you’re far enough apart from your fellow diners to have privacy.
Go for the Bento Box, it’s the best value for money.
The place is awesome! However they lose one star because they got rid of the special fried rice, which was my favourite dish in all of LONDON. It will be missed. :(
Another Wardour St favourite, Satsuma serves up good quality Japanese food at a reasonable price for the area. I can certainly understand the comparisons to Wagamama, but this place just seems to do it all that little bit better.
The staff are very efficient and you never have to wait long to be seated or for your food to arrive. The communal eating set up makes it a great place for lunch and the Bento boxes are as good as any I’ve had.
Satsuma is just an ok place to go to in my books.
The location is good, right in the heart of soho, but I find the layout inside to be a little claustrophobic, which for me stops the space from feeling relaxed.
The menu is extensive enough, the food is quite nice, the portion sizes are fine and the prices reasonable.
There are usually quite a few groups of gay men with a little pretention hanging out in here, which puts me off a bit. I don’t find it particularly relaxing or fun, so although I wouldn’t mind going here with friends, I’d never choose it myself.
Satsuma is ok but a bit boring and lacking in atmosphere for me.
Satsuma is a 'safe’ option for japanese food if you’re in Soho in my opinion. It’s not the best, but the quality is quite high and the service is fast. There are more authentic places nearby, but a lot of those are small, fill up quickly, and a bit daunting for some, if you don’t know your way around a japanese menu. I had the Satsuma bento and it was very nice indeed, if a touch pricy. Still, I was stuffed by the time I left. I can recommend the sweet potato tempura - delicious! These days, I often avoid this area in the evenings as it usually means a large queue but it’s good if you want lunch in casual surroundings or if you have that bento craving..
I had a lovely meal here, nice Japanese food on the long tables and benches that are now becoming popular with this type of food. The staff were attentive and friendly. Facilities were clean. I only rate this three stars as I feel that in this area there are many of these sorts of places and that this is quite average. Also they tend to do asian fusion food- which I didn’t think was that tasty.
Absolutely the best Japanese in Soho, probably London, and very reasonably priced too. The endamame beans are to die for and although it is rather basic in its decor, it always attracts a trendy crowd.
A lot of my colleagues are big fans of Satsuma, but it just doesn’t do it for me. I’m not experienced enough in Japanese food to tell you whether it is “traditionally” good. However, I had chicken curry, and while it tasted okay, it was incredibly greasy and just a bit flat. I am reliably informed that the bento boxes are fantastic (the general consensus was that they’re the best in Soho), and they certainly beat those of another better known chain of Sushi restaurants.
The service was okay, but it’s always busy and thus impersonal. I don’t think it’s necessarily the fault of the staff, but the modern interior makes you feel like just another quick visitor.
Not for me, I’m afraid.
While I love the food here I must say my first impression of this place is that it’s a Wagamama rip-off. The whole communal bench thing is not to everyone’s liking. There are cheaper options for Japanese food within walking distance but I found the food here better for some unknown reasons. Expect long, REALLY long queues during peak hours.
Good Japanese on Wardour Street. The staff is friendly and the food comes out quickly. While the food is good, it doesn’t stand out as so amazing that I feel drawn to going back. But it’s definitely good for a quick pre-theatre bite. Be wary of the communal seating. Most of the seating is downstairs, so don’t be put off by a short queue and the small seating area upstairs.
Having gone to Satsuma fairly regularly for a few years now, I’ll add to the list of favourable reviews. Although I do think the service is not as friendly now as it used to be, the food is still excellent. There is a nice variety of bento boxes as well as individual noodle and rice dishes and various types of sushi.
If you can get there when a space at the window is free then you’re very lucky as they are the first tables to go as it can be very pleasant to sit there eating your meal, watching Soho go by. However, if a window table is not to be, then don’t fret as the long tables and benches downstairs, of which there are plenty, are spaced out enough so as not to feel too cramped.
I’m always worried that one day I will walk down Wardour Street and Satsuma will no longer be there, as it can be very easy to miss if you don’t already know about it, but hopefully it’s consistency in always providing a great meal will keep it going for years to come.
