strengthofabear: “Came here on New Years Day for Lunch with Ruiz and others, ended up staying till 11pm. Good jukebox. Helpful staff. Nice beer garden. Good location. Food was very average, standard pub stuff at best and not a lot of choice.” more...9 reviews of Three Crowns in English
Could be great... it's a nice space and they have a decent wine list. Food's overpriced, but then that's not a massive surprise. The thing that makes this a no-go zone at weekends is that it's one giant playground. Enough of all this 'if you don't like kids, why live in Stoke Newington?' business. As far as I know there's just one pub that doesn't allow kids in, while everywhere else seems fare game for a game of Twister with the under 5s. Some of us lived here before it turned into Nappy Valley you know! A child-free cafe or two, and another couple of adults-only pubs in N16 would do a roaring trade.
That said, when I had friends visit with two noisy kids recently, I knew exactly where we could go for lunch... Straight to the Three Crowns. We were a perfect fit with the other parents who wanted to spend all afternoon in the boozer while ignoring their awful, screaming, rampaging brood... And I didn't feel self conscious about the noise we were making. I looked over at a couple of child-free chaps trying to enjoy a quiet pint by the window and wondered what on earth they were doing here...
markcoflaherty 10 years! And the Daniel Defoe is 'the one pub' I refer to. A few more would be nice...!

Only been to this place once with my party family we booked the private room for Christmas lunch.
There was 30 odd of us and everyone of us loved our meal this is enough for me to give em 5 stars all day long as some of are bunch can be very hard to please.
I loved all three of my courses and for under £30 plus drinks cant complain. Good food cheap drinks nice atmosphere.
Arrived here early doors on Sunday with three mates who hadn't been before. I'd been singing the Three Crowns Sunday Roast praises so much I was suddenly a little worried their expectations wouldn't be met. However, I needn't have worried; 2 perfectly cooked roast beefs, 1 delectable lamb and one mediocre nut roast (I thought it was mediocre, not my friend who actually ordered it) later we were four happy (and full!) campers.
The portion sizes are formidable and you can't beat their sides of carrot & swede mash and braised red cabbages (not to mention the mandatory bouncy-castle-sized Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, gravy and homemade mouthwatering horseraddish).
The only downer was the imposed time restrictions that you get by taking an early sitting. If you take a later sitting, you can lounge for as long as you like. We normally grab the Sunday papers, Rummikub and make a whole afternoon of it (keeping the americanos/bloody marys/wines and puddings flowing of course...).
At around £14 a head for the main, it's not the cheapest place for a Sunday roast, but it is one of the best I'd say, so fair price to pay.
Just a couple of niggles... why the music so loud on a Sunday lunch that I can't hear my friends (thank you for humoring us though when we asked you to turn it down) and put a few more lights on in the dark, winter evening - we can't see the Rummikub faces!
I came here before, many moons ago. During the day so I did not realize quite how dark they like to keep it in the evenings. Had a job seeing my friends!
This time they had one real ale on. There were a couple of other pumps, but they were out of service unfortunately.
This is a big modern bar and not to my tastes at all I am afraid.

You’ll find all the things wrong with modern pubs in this one handy venue.
In the pub bit, at first the music seems deafening but then you realise that you can just make out the braying of the wannabe hoxtonite knob-cheeses that you’re surrounded by.
In the food bit, you hope that the lah-di-dah descriptions and high prices will be worth it. You’d be wrong.
But even with all of that, it’s the poor service that you’ll really remember.
Extremely popular, very close to me but I almost never go here. They got this place right when the designed it. It really is like a better version of a Slug and Lettuce or any gastro pub really, particularly one you might find in much posher neighbourhoods like Islington.
It’s got a huge indoor space divided between a large restaurant area and loungy pub section. I haven’t been into the restaurant bit. Mostly because I’ve seen the menu and I simply have no interest in paying ten pounds or more for sausages and mashed potatoes – no matter what fancy words they give to their products.
The pub section gets really full later on in the evening and it’s spread out nicely amongst broad lounge sweets and tables and chairs. If my parents were visiting or I was on a date (Both very remote possibilities) then this would definitely be the pub for me.
Ok so the first place i come to review and its not in the Qype almanac! There may be a simple reason for this- such as it is a reasonably new establishment, but judging from the fairly drifty other places elaborated on Im surprised this has been overlooked.
Anywho- This bar/pub/ gastro place is something of a small revolution in Stoke Newington, marking the turn of the general demographics in the local area from bohrmian chique, to a more mainstream, if trendy middle classish establishment.
Dont get me wrong, this isnt a bad thing, in fact the atmosphere, bar tenders (apparently time-on their hands actors) and beers (including a range of fine ales) make this a great evening out, and at weekends is particularly busy. The three crowns is also careful not to go over the top, its not too self appreciating or full of its own bull, which marks it apart from other similar bars in shoreditch or old street.
Im babbling. This place is good. Go there when youre in Stokey.
It's a really big place separated in two. On the left, you have the pub and on the right you have the restaurant. Between them, there is the pub's counter which is also impressive.
I like the sofas and the different lights which give a 50's atmopshere as there is a dim light.I feel like i'm home in those sofas.
I appreciate the restaurant where the food is amazing!
You can take only starters but the menu is about £20 with three courses.
It's definitely delicious and it's not expensive for the place as it's really nice for lovers or friends who want to have a meal and then take a place on a sofa with a glass of wine.
