It’s definitely a treat to get to go into a house in this part of London!
It’s a National Trust property so I don’t know whether I would visit it if I wasn’t a member, but it makes for an interesting visit. The garden in particular is lovely and well tended.
As well as it being a house of an eminent victorian literary figure, it’s also worth seeing as an example of how the other half lived in this era in general. It is set over several floors and it was a bit crowded when I went, but it can’t really be helped given the layout of the house.
It makes for an interesting afternoon out, but not a whole day’s activity! It helped me answer a question on 'University Challenge’ the week after so I must have learnt something whilst I was there!

Just a few minutes from the busy King's Road No 24 Cheyne Row was the home of the influential 19th century writer Thomas Carlyle and Jane his clever and ambitious wife Jane.It was first preserved as a literary shrine in 1895. It used to be the gathering place of many from the literary world including Dickens,Tennayson and Browning.
