4 reviews of Quebec in English
Yeah…. I actually didn’t know this was a gay bar when i walked in. Not that that bothers me, it just took me a bit by surprise that’s all. Anyway, as doubtingthom says, this place is a”dark and musty affair”. The beer seemed strangely expensive. £4 a pint!? Even standing outside seemed a bit odd (no tables or chairs and a real alley sort of feel).
Not much else to say really. I quickly necked my pint and went for dinner. I definitely would not recommend the Quebec (regardless of your sexual orientation).
Stopped by for a beverage the other day. Yes, the clientele seems to be older, and if you are under 40 some of them might assume you are a working boy for hire, but I dont think the pub should be judged by its clientele.
The staff are young and pretty good looking (many of them Spanish), and friendly. Drink prices are reasonable. The place is quiet enough that you can have a conversation…something that I wish more places in London can achieve (quiet places are almost non-existent in Soho!).
And yes, I can understand why some of the agist members of the GLBT community might think the place is like a morgue…average age of the clientele is easily 65, and sometimes you’ll see a collection of elderly gents sitting near each other, but not talking to anyone, which can be off-putting to some (I’ve seen this behavior before in nursing homes). But I remember one time going there and seeing an particularly chipper guy in a bright green suit and shiny tophat, dancing the night away. He may have been close to 80 years old, but it was inspiring to me to see that life for gay men doesn’t have to end at 40! He was having the time of his life, and I hope when I get to that age I’ll still be having fun with life too!
The Quebec has been known as the “Elephants Graveyard” for decades. I’m amazed it is still going. Old Gays went there to die in the seventies and it seems that it is as grave as ever.
It may be the oldest gay bar in London but this dark, musty bar resembles a morgue or museum which it’s dated look and even more dated crowd. Okay the drinks prices are okay but the crowd is terminal and the venue itself is so far removed from the rest of the gay scene that I can’t envisage why any self-respecting gay man or woman would venture out here.
