Another stunning gelateria a few blocks from the Trevi Fountain. Go with a map because blink and you’ll miss it.
One of the must-do for ice afficianados.
Mmmm

Das ist eine alte Tradition. Nicht viel Auswahl an Eis, aber dafuer eins der Besten in town! Vor Allem, kann man hier etwas ausgefallerene Sorten finden….! Also, einen Besuch Wert!!!!!

San Crispino offers the best ice cream I’ve tasted anywhere in the world. Their whisky flavoured gelato is to die for.
I’ve visited Rome twice now, and on the second time we booked a hotel which was a short walking distance from San Crispino. I sort of pity the tourists, who buy their gelato from regular cornershops where the ice cream is in an open container the whole day. Tasty, yes, but nowhere near the extacy of San Crispono.
Only Giolitti comes close.

One can endlessly argue whether San Crispino`s gelato is the best in the world, but, without doubts, the quality is exceptional and flavours unique. I can only praise the skills (both gastronomical and commercial) of the proprietors Giuseppe and Pasquale Alongi.
At San Crispino, all milk-based flavours (with the exception of cacao-base ones) fall into two extreme categories:
- Yellowish “cremas” (barolo, zabaigone armagnac, whiskey, nocciola, etc). The difference between all these flavours is, at the first glance, really subtle (esp. to someone used to typical strong, enhanced with additives, taste of Italian gelato in most other places), but really worth exploring
- Heavy, over-saturated mixtures (meringues with nocciola, stracciatella, pistazio), which I really do not like. Too much filling destroys the taste of gelato (e.g. meringues with nocciola consists of almost 20% of nuts).
Prices for cups are certainly too high compared with what one gets (both in terms of portion size and quality). Takeaway boxes are more reasonably priced (bearing in mind the quality of the product), but are by no means cheap (21 euro/kg).
For some reason the staff is very hesitant to allow customers to taste the gelato before buying, even if one buys a big takeaway box (can’t understand why - no try, no buy).
There is a small, nicely decorated sitting decorated where guests can enjoy their coffee.
One minus is that the gelateria on via Panetteria can be quite crowded with tourists (but what else can one expect of central Rome?).
All in all, San Crispino is in a league of its own and is an absolute must for any gelato-lover.
