A good drinkery a little way away from the town centre. Not entirely populated by students, though it gets its fair share - fortunately there is plenty of space. Good for its cocktails, which while not being top of the line are certainly drinkable and very affordable. Great fun to go to.
This pub can be a little gem when with friends on a warm summers evening, having a pint or two in the large beer garden. The pub itselfis a the small side though but still adaquate, behind the bar there are a variety of ales although tend to be a bit pricey compared to other pub around the same area.
The maypole will show football matchs most saturday night and does attract a good atmosphere. It also serves a wide range of food at resonable prices. I personally find the service to be one of the best pubs in cambrdieg and makes the maypole a must visit on any summer night out.

The Maypole is popular among the girls for the cocktails, and for the boys as it shows the football whenever a match is on. It is intimate and traditional, close by the town centre but hidden away enough to be more of a 'locals’ pub than a tourist pub. The décor could do with a revamp, and the toilets are not always as clean as they could be. In the summer, many people make use of the outdoor seating, which doesn’t have the nicest views (a car park) but it does mean you can enjoy a drink in the sunshine.
If you want to eat there, don’t expect to find pub prices. The meals are pricy for what they are, and you might be better off walking around the corner to one of Cambridge’s many restaurants where you will find food for the same price, and of better quality. Alternatively, go to a different pub where you will pay pub prices, not Maypole prices.
A lively and friendly pub, these is a great place to go for a quick drink, even if you do then move on for dinner.
The Maypole is great. It’s family run, they cook lovely Italian food and the cocktails are an institution (their margaritas are very good). It does get very crowded, especially when the 'Gents of St. Johns’ sing there at Christmas time!
University photos adorn the walls, and they sell real ale as well as the cocktails mentioned . A Deuchars goes down well for example!
I’ve been when it’s not very busy, but it’s just not the same..go there when it is packed, and enjoy the atmosphere. They have a large outdoor area as well, which is handy in the summer.
The Maypole has it all. Great food, great drinks, friendly staff. The landlords are Italian, and so is the food. There is plenty of it, it’s reasonably priced, and it is delicious. They also have a splendid cocktail menu, and you have to try hard to avoid happy hour. They have Irn-Bru on tap, should you like that kind of thing. Gets very busy, but since it’s a great pub you can kind of see why.
Busy sports bar with a large outdoor seating area, situated down a narrow lane (Portugal Place) from the Bridge Street. It’s a modern building, without a lot of intrinsic character, and the main bar is dominated - completely - by a huge screen, for Sky Sports.
It does, however, sell real ale, including on my visit, Deuchars IPA, Mordue’s Radgie Gadgie, Old Speckled Hen and Tribute Ale, among others. Apparently, the landlord is renowned for his cocktails, should you be so minded. At the rear outside, there;s a serving hatch for off-licence sales and basic cooked food.
This is a great place to have a quiet pint or two with some friends. On the way back from the boathouses it is perfect for a relaxing drink with a large and tasty meal on a sunday afternoon. The classic drink, The Red-boy, is one that you have to try once. Try asking the barman for the history behind the drink for an interesting tale. The Maypole is also the haunt of the Gents, the best singing group in Cambridge by miles. Find out a date when they are visiting and get there early as it packs out quickly for the Gents. As a happy bonus it is the latest pub open in Cambridge so is a handy place to remember at midnight when you are still a little thirsty...
