I went to see 'The 39 steps’ at this theatre. It is a tiny place ,very atmospheric ,buried way under the ground in Piccadilly Circus.A real old fashioned ,ornate theatre witha tiny stage and a small audience.Pink ,velvet seats and a very cosy feel. There are a few boxes but actually, the people in them were having to adopt some uncomfortable poses to see the stage properly at some points during teh show.Note, I am 5 ft 5 inches and my knees touched the seat in front.Get an aisle seat if you are tall!!I noticed upstairs that they had a small window which I think was for buying tickets for other shows,It was closed when we went and we watched people coming in ,realising and then going away again.Perhaps it is one of those 'lastminute’ places. Not sure.

The Criterion is unique among theatres of London’s West End, as it is almost entirely below street level. This alone makes it a curiosity. The theatre itself reminded me rather of the Liverpool Playhouse - a fairly narrow auditorium, with two or three galleries. The bar and lobby are quite lavish, architecturally.
It has housed some excellent productions over the years, most recently The 39 Steps, an energetic and witty adaptation of the 1935 Hitchcock film that parodies it at the same time as paying it gentle homage.
