104 reviews of The Tower of London in English
one of the best places in London to see some of our history, plus after you can see the Tower bridge just outside
if you have never been before make sure you join one of the Yeoman tours, they can liven up the journey and give you the history of the castle adding things for you to checkout after
With this attraction…‘you can’t go wrong’. History, pageant etc etc. A place that everyone, tourists and Londoners, must visit.
The Crown jewels are a must. Avoid queues by arriving early and going directly to see the Jewels. Then you have the rest of the day to wander through history.

For visitors to London this is a “must see” as is a place steeped in history and momentous events from British history. Here you feel the ghosts of past kings and queens and those that met their fate on the chopping block-and it is the place to see the crown jewels which are simply breathtaking.
lovely place. Had a lovely time
it was ok, but i honestly expected more..the customer assistants didn’t deliver!
My partner and I went on Monday. We bought our tickets online but still had to queue 15 mins to collect them. Then we joined the large queue to get in. We joined a tour, but it was so big we coudn’t hear a thing and done our thing.
It looks fantatic, it’s a shame some of it has been re-built or altered which lacks the historical feel. It looks quite large but is deceiving as there isn’t a great deal to see. We got around it in 3 hours and alot of that was due to the queues. We couldn’t wait to visit Bloody Tower and the torture chamber, after queuing for that we found only 3 torture items with a brief description and were out quicker than we queued! The White Tower was also a let down. I’m fascinated by Henry VIII but there wasn’t alot of info available, the armour display was great….when we could see it.
The Crown Jewels are a must see, but again a long queue, we made this a last visit as the queue earlier wasn’t moving. Took us around 25 mins to get in then a slow move around depending if the people infront wanted to watch all the video footage of the Coronation. The jewels were beautiful and glad we saw them.
We kept checking in case we had missed somewhere, must nope…we had seen everything. For £17 each it wasn’t really worth the money. Maybe if they’d had re-enactments it would have been more interesting, but we did feel like we’d just ticked a box and said ‘been here’ and we so wanted it to be more than that. What really let our time here down was the overcrowding and rude tourists. You cannot move in some areas, get bashed around, can’t read things without being elbowed or turning around and having someones bad breath right in your face! Taking photo’s is even harder!!
There were some great views of Tower Bridge.
We were glad we didn’t bring the children as like us, they are into history, but would have been sooo bored here.
We ate in the amouries restaurant, overpriced as ever and more queues, food was ok though.
Won’t be going back here sadly.
I’ve lived in London for 2 years before visiting the Tower of London, I always thought it was something for tourists willing to spend £17.00 on the ticket and that I wouldn’t enjoy it. But at the end, after so many people telling me it was great, I decided to give it a try. I was surprised of how much I liked it at the end, and how long we ended up staying there (about 6h, the whole day!). It was entertaining and not boring at all (I’m not that much into History, I’m afraid).
We did the free guided tour as recommended, and also had lunch in the Armouries café. It’s a bit pricey but food is not bad. It’s better to bring lunch if you’re planning to stay long, we didn’t because we arrived at 10.00am thinking that we’d be done by lunch time.
I'm just not sure how to feel about this place. On the one hand, I'm a huge fan of historical places and I love to see where crazy things have happened.. and I love the macabre so the whole execution thing appeals to me (I'm weird, and a prospective scare actor). On the other hand, this seemed like a huge tourist trap. The guided tour was entertaining and informative, but it wasn't very long. The rest is pretty much set up as a museum, which in my opinion trivialises the history that went on here.
For how much it costs to get in, and for how I've been wanting to go in for almost 2 years, I expected better :/
As all things in London these days very expensive to get in.
Though impressive and really makes you feel the history.
Seeing the crown jewels was a must on my list, suitably impressed :-)
I would say this isn't very interesting for younger children, so dont waste your money taking them in. They will enjoy the river cruise far more.
Loving it if you havent seen the Tower of London you have missed something, even though i dont think its the "real" crown jewels, since they use to be guarded with guns and guards an now you can look at them as long as you want to but anyway loving it :-)
Basically London's number 1 tourist attraction, housing 1000 years of history, the crown jewels etc. etc. A bit expensive though... still... very interesting and easily worth at least half a day wandering 'round.
We went to Tower of London this weekend and I would really recommend waiting for the guided tour by one of the beefeaters (it takes about an hour) as you will learn so much more and also get an insight into the lives of those who lived there before.
We loved it.
UK Greeting Cards I agree with you when our family went we waited for the guide worth waiting for really good day out. Quite exspencive for a familey of four but still a good day out.

The tower should be visited if one is in London. The castle of her Majesty hosts the crown jewels (Jewel House). In the past it was used as weapon storage and prison for "Higher Earners". Everything optimised for tourists and one drives by the crown jewels on a walking street, that nobody stays for too long (Rather unusual, but it works). New to me was the relation to the German history, the last prisoner was the deputy Hitler´s - Rudolf Hess.
Truly a wonder, you should alot yourself at least 4 hours to enjoy the tower. Some things you must must must check out:
The White tower's chapel - built in the 12th centruy, it is a marvel of engineering.
The Yeoman tour. This is an absolute must. Our guide was brilliant, funny, and so knowledgeable.
The Tourture tower. Do not bring the kids into this one.
The Crown Jewels. Make sure you bypass the gift shop after this part of the tour, if you have kids (or are a kid at heart) you will go overboard shopping there.
Having a cup of tea by the raven's green. Although very sadly, when speaking with one of the Yeomans he informed us that Thor, one of the most prolific ravens, had recently died. His partner of over 20 years, Mooning, was beside herself.
Very nice castle, worth visiting, although is a bit pricey.
Spent about 3 hours wondering around which was ok, more than that you get a bit bored.
Found Windsor Castle much more amusing!!!
If you're a londoner and have never been then it's worth a visit if you have a few hours to kill.
And of course if you're a tourist it's an essential stop on your itenary.
While the price is a bit steep at £17 per person it's not much more than a trip to the cinema after you've bought munchies.

A must see on a London trip. Here you can spend a nice time. Very interesting exhibition and sometimes events (We saw a knight sword duel). The crown jewels is a must see - WOW ! After the tiring visit, one can relax at the Thames and enjoy the view over the tower bridge.
£17 is rather a ridiculous price to pay but the Tower of London is definitely worth a visit whether you're a tourist or a local.
You know the general idea but I must stress just how good the crown jewels are as something to see. It's quite breathtaking and worth the trip. Plus perfect for any visiting foreign guests.
Can’t go wrong with a bit of history can you? The Tower of London is one of those places I have wandered past, slightly loathe to pay my £16 entry to see what the fuss is about. However as a English history obsessive it was only a matter of time before I caved.
I had no idea how big it was inside! the size of the area somehow doesn’t translate from the Thames or from the entry point.
I really enjoyed seeing the Traitor’s Gate from the inside, the ravens clipped and poised on the grass, Beefeaters strutting about, and getting the various views from each tower.
The current exhibition in the Armoury is a display of the history of King Henry VIII armour- it was really fascinating to see how he grew over time, and get a real sense of the man.
The drawback for me was that the map cost £5- you would think that would be included in admission (also didn’t love the guy selling the maps telling me and my friends “don’t be so blonde about everything” when we refused it!!)
