Philpott’s Mezzaluna
This seems to be a reliable local restaurant servicing Finchley’s ravenous residents.Philpott’s is new and very bold decorated with coloured portraits of Marlon Brando,Dean Martin and Madonna its got a pleasant atmosphere and the prices are kind to the purse or credit card. Spaghetti and meatballs is very popular on the menu, but he has other more refined things like chicken, foie gras on lemon flavoured barley risotto. The dish had very subtle flavours brought out by the creative use of stocks. As the main course I had a gamey dish guinea fowl with lentils, spinach and chestnuts. My escort for the evening had a nicely seasoned steak which was chargrilled and served on a bed of oxtail cottage pie.
There was an extensive wine list to choose from and 70 of them were competitively priced at under 20 pounds. The wines came from Chile,Australia,Bulgaria and Switzerland. We had the Spainish Grenada X at only 14.00 pounds. I would say that the portions were generous. The dessert a rather well balanced dolce di cioccolata had a coffee liquer which had quite a kick to it.The passion fruit semi-freddo was not so good but it was edibly tasty.
