Brilliant place, well designed light and airy feel to the whole place. His work isn’t displayed in the 'throw all the famous stuff to the front’ way, but a more thoughful and interesting way. It really helps you understand, or at least attempt to, the way he worked and the changes in his style over time. This place is a must go for any art fan, or anyone for that matter.

I wasn’t suprise about all the art work of Van Gogh. This is really my favorite artist. I read about him and i was interessed in the paintings. A big collection of his paintings. Pitty that not all the paintings is in here. To see everything what he painted, you have to buy a book and read about it. Every tourist have to see this! I went many times to this museum.

I was presently surprised by the Van Gogh museum. It gives you a whole new perspective on the illustrious artist. First off, rather than just having his main works in the limelight, the exhibition is done chronologically. It was amazing to see how the artist changed his style with both the times and personal situation.
The queue was a bit long, but we went early and managed to stay ahead of all the large groups - are they not the bane of every museum. The price was a bit heavy, hence the less than perfect score. However, if I had the chance to do it again I would. Definitely a must see in Amsterdam.

The Museum is a great place to visit and you can see Van Gogh’s most famous paintings such as the sunflowers and the bedroom. The range of Van Gogh paintings is vast and there are some from other artists as well.
The gift shop enables you to buy prints of the most popular paintings.

The collection of paintings is one of the best I have seen, it is not over busy you still feel like you have space to walk and look at each picture in turn. The gift shop is highly prices as with all attractions.

In my opinion this is one of the more expensive attractions but worth it.This contains more than 200 of van goughs paintings, and about 580 drawings. Its amazing. It has excellent wheel chair access and a self service restaurant where the food is okay,NOT GREAT BUT YOU DONT VISIT FOR THE FOOD.This is the closest i will probably get to owning a real painting unfortunatly.

Nice, spacious and clean museum set in Museum Quarter behind the park. It’s very open, airy and modern and holds so many of the famous paintingsd by Van Gogh such as “Sunflowers”.
This is really popular - especially with school/ collage groups and so it may be worth booking in advance during th busier seasons.
There is a gift shop at the end where you can buy postcards, pens, artist pads, easels etc.
Not too expensive either.

I saw many Van Gogh pieces here that I had not been aware of as well as some of his most famous. I also learnt a lot about his life and how he had developed his style of painting. Both were very interesting to me.
The price for the Van Gogh Musee is expensive, but I was lucky enough to know someone who had a museum card so we got tickets for much cheaper.
The cafe at the front of the gallery is very poor. It’s a self-service cafe and always seems busy, but the food was a let down.

Yes, the artwork is pretty amazing and there is a lot of his work here, it’s a nice new modern gallery too, but this has all been said up above, and for that it would get 5 stars.
Only problem is the bloody price! I seem to remember it being around 20 euro and it was packed inside, and the special exhibition hall was also empty :/ I don’t think such a great artist would of wanted it this way, and for that it loses a star.

We visited the Van Gogh Museum on a rainy Saturday - perfect weather for museums. There was a queue to get in, even with our I-AMsterdam cards but the queue moved quite quickly so before we knew it, we were checking our coats and walking through security.
The museum was running an exhibition of 19th Century painters when we were there, but as time was of the essence for us, we raced up to the floor where the Van Goghs were displayed. The early works are somewhat gloomy, but as we progressed through the display, which is arranged chronologically, with useful summaries of the different stages of VG’s artistic development, the colours soon brightened and there we were in front of some of VG’s more famous works. My favourite paintings were of Van Gogh’s bedroom in The Yellow House in Arles, Gauguin’s self-portrait, the famed irises, which are much more vivid than any reproduction when you meet them face to face, and the Japanese-style paintings which influenced VG for a time.
Well worth your time, especially as the museum is located close to the Rijksmuseum and Stedilijk Museum, although both of those are currently undergoing serious renovation so may or may not be fully open, depending on when you visit. It’s worth checking in advance.
One disappointment was how over-priced the museum shop was, for instance, a postcard book will set you back 12.75 Euros, a children’s activity book costs 17.90 Euros (they’re only children!!) and notebooks emblazoned with a VG artwork are around 8.50 Euros. The individual postcards are the best value you’ll get around here.

Am I allowed to say a teensy bit overrated? Van Gogh was arguably one of the best painters that existed and more is known about his life and death than many other painters. It’s great to see some of those famous artworks you’ve studied though bare in mind that some of them are elsewhere in the world. Go if you’re a fan or art student, otherwise there are better ways to fill your time. Oh one nifty thing they have here is an interactive stand that allows you to record a personal video message from the museum and send it via email to friends and family which is quite fun.

Unpretentious, Beautiful, Inspirational and so sad are all words that come to mind when entering, viewing and feeling the work of Van Gogh here. I have always liked and admired the work of this great man, but I think it’s only when you visit the Musee Van Gogh that you can really appreciate what an amazing man and artist he was. The way the exhibition is set out is both simple, but also very powerfully displayed. You’re lead through the various phases which Van Gogh went through as his work evolved. I adored his work whilst he spent time in Paris and post this time, especially the blosom paintings….absolutely GORGEOUS!! I intend to go back to Amsterdam again some time soon and if I only spend time here, then I think I’ll feel fulfilled.

The first time I visited the Van Gogh Museum, I was only 14 years old and decided right then that Vincent Van Gogh was my favorite artist. Seeing his paintings in person allows you to see the texture of each piece and to see the layers of paint he used.
I visited the museum again six years later, and my appreciation continued to grow. I hope to be able to return again soon because there is such a difference between a print and the real piece of art.
Some of Van Gogh’s most famous works, such as Starry Night, are not at this museum, but the museum is definitely worth a visit.
The entrance line/queue can be long. You might try purchasing tickets from your hotel or hostel, if they are available. Another option may be to purchase the tickets a day ahead.
Also, I can’t gaurantee that the hot dog stand is still there, but there was an amazing hot dog stand that had all the fixings (mustard, relish, onions, etc) located just outside the museum.

The finest selection of art I have ever seen. I love Van Gogh’s paintings and to see them in the flesh here was rivetting. They are displayed really well so everyone is able to see even when the place is quite crowded. Obviously the largest collection of the artists work in the world and one which changes continually as works are shared around the art world. No visit to Amsterdam is complete without coming here - I have been to the city about 10 times and come here on every occasion and it never tires!

Better than I expected. Van Gogh is so overdone in the commercial sense - everybody has a poster of the sunflowers or irises, right? however, there was much, much more in this museum and it was worth fighting the crowds. We got a ticket ahead of time and were in line before the 10 am opening, so were able to get in right away. Make sure you have at least a couple of hours. The comparisons with other painters, mentors, and various details of the exhibits made it very educational and gave depth to the life and work of Van Gogh. If you go to Amsterdam, don’t miss it.

I don’t really have a ‘bucket list’ but if I did, visiting the Van Gogh museum would be on it. And during our short stay in Amsterdam I was able to fulfill this life long dream.
We went on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised by the lack of a queue! Another nice thing was the dj spinning and the bar set up in the main atrium area. While you can’t take your drinks into the main museum it was nice to have the option of grabbing a drink before or after.
I highly recommend spending the extra money for the audio tour…it really breaks down a lot of his work in depth and gives you an understanding of what was going on in Van Gogh’s mind during each period. I had no idea that towards the end of his life he painted 80 works of art in 80 days. And to think, he only sold one painting while still alive!
You won’t find a lot of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings here but you will find the largest collection of his art in one place. And as an added bonus your museum admission gets you into the temporary exhibit - in our case we saw the fantastic work of John Everett Millais, including his famous painting Ophelia.
In contrast to Van Gogh, Millais took four months just to paint the creek in his painting!
I can’t recommend the Van Gogh museum enough and suggest going on a Friday night when the crowds are smaller and the scene a bit hipper.
Opening times:
tous les jours de 10h à 17h
