MOSI (the new name for the Museum of Science and Industry…which I rather like) should be the first on the list for attractions/museums in Manchester, purely for the fact it lays out the industrial heritage of the city like no other.
Head to the 'steam engines section first off and see the huge wheels of revolution in working order and take in the smells and sounds of these beasts which take you right back to the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
The collection of steam trains (a few of which you can climb inside) are worth the trip alone and just outside this exhibition you’ll find the world’s first railway passenger station (you can ride an old steam train along the a small section of the original route for a small fee).
Across from this and in the main building you’ll find an exhibition dedicated to the textile industry where you can learn about how cotton shaped Manchester into the place it is today.
Across from both these exhibitions is the air transport museum. Although a large space full of aircraft of all shapes and sizes, this section has become jaded over the past few years and is long overdue a rethink.

Within MOSI there are a series of successful changing exhibitions - these are charged however. So far they haven’t seemingly put a foot wrong with these shows - Dr Who was a roaring success (as was the dinosaur exhibition which preceded it) and the current Body Worlds show looks set to do the same. In two minds about going to this event - the tendency to crane my neck towards the horrific is slowly taking over my fear that gripping hypochondria will follow my visit. Not entirely sure the kids would skip around this show as they did at the Dr Who event.

There is a café and restaurant (and gift shop) with MOSI so plenty of opportunities to recharge your batteries on a busy, but interesting day at this fine Museum.

I have been coming here since I was really young, for school trips, with my mum and now I am older, with friends.
My boyfriend and I went to see the bodyworlds exhibition. VERY GOOD, very gorey as well though.
This place has so much to do apart from the exhibitions, which you must pay for, everything else is free.
I love seeing how wool is made in the factory and all the underground sewers.
I remember seeing some fantastic exhibits here too, the dinosaur one a few years back was awesome.
A great place for kids, adults and dates.

Recently I visited Mosi for the BODYWORKS exhibition which was fantastic. The exhibition has many displays of Gunter Van Hagens work with plastination. Its a highly educational exhibition and I would recommend it to all.

Excellent place, although you have to pay for parking the entire museum is absolutely free. Includes fascinating information about history/industry in every place around the world. Great gift shop, too.

The Museum of Science and Industry is ideal for people of all ages. Its location behind Granada Studios makes it an ideal location, and it has something for everyone. It’s a great look into how the past and present combine. It also has a nice cafe and gift area. Great place to go if you have kids.

If you're trying to kill a couple of hours in Manchester City Centre then you can't go wrong by wandering over to Castlefield and the MMOSI.

If you have kids then even better as there's plenty of buttons for them to press and stuff to mess about with, but even if you're a lone visitor there's still tonnes to get out of a visit.

The main exhibitions are free except the "guest" exhibition where you have to shell out around five or six quid to get in. Some of these have been excellent (the current-but-slightly-gruesome Bodyparts one, the Doctor Who one) and some have been mildly disappointing (the Mars one); try and get a suss on how good it looks once you're in the main foyer!

A celebration of manchester as the world's first industrial city, this place covers six arces and includes the oldest passenger railway station anywhere. Thoroughly modern and with the revamped 'Xperiment' section this could amuse you for hours. Static tours here include a trip through the sewers (with authentic aromas) and a massive hall packed with planes and space stuff. There's a good view of the adjacent coronation street set from the 'Xperiment' - they always film outside on mondays if you want to be a voyeur on the action.

The Museum of Science and Industry is an absolutely worthwhile treasure tucked away behind Granada Studios. It consistently has a variety of interesting and thoughtful exhibitions and events. I have never been less than impressed with what is on display and have taken away a considerable degree of useful knowledge that I did not have prior to my visit.. Warning – those not especially keen on the sound of school children screaming, running around and generally causing chaos may do well to avoid half term. Otherwise, a thoroughly productive way to spend a few hours. Highly recommended.

I visited MOSI for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I was a little apprehensive at first because when I hear the word "museum" i think boring sunday afternoons with your grandparents, but this was fantastic! It was free, but if you wanted to see the Dr Who exhibition, you had to pay £6 (apparently they have regular special exhibitions, but this was the only one I knew about). There is so much to look at and do, with interactive sections. The early part is mainly for children, but the other buildings are for everyone, and its very educational. I learned so much about early Manchester, and there is a building with transport over the years in it. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I only wish I had gone as a child so i could fully appreciate it.

mosi has free entry although if you want to see the special exhibition there is a fee. until 5th november 2007 the exhibition is 'dr who' featuring actual props, costumes & monsters from the third series of the bbc programme. the free regular events include manchester mills, planetarium shows, engines at work. from one of the rooms in the main building (i cant remember which one!) you can see 'coronation street' & you can often see filming taking place. theres lots more going on plus there is a restaurant where you can enjoy sunday lunch & also a cafe if you just want a snack. a great day out with a wide variety of things to see & do.
