I have never been to such a massive cake shop, in fact I had never considered that it could even be possible for such a massive cake shop to exist, but exist it does and it seems to generally be completely full! I had four of the custard tarts (local specialty) and a glass of port, and I’ve never had a better hangover remedy

This is a must in Lisbon. Worth a detour to go there

After having read all the hype for these custard tarts: from qype, the guardian and blogs in general, I was really looking forward to trying these custard tarts. The pastry was not light and crumbly, but papery with a filo-like texture. The custard filling was far too sweet and eggy with a lumpy texture, not smooth. Flavour was lacking, as the sugar was too overpowering and the lumpy consistency did not make it enjoyable to eat.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend going there, as they were quite nice and if you have a sweet tooth you will definitely enjoy it, however not for me.

I should say that although my family and I were not too thrilled with the custard tarts, they loved this pain au raisin type thing, with chocolatese and walnuts. You should definitely try this; you two may even prefer it to the custard tarts!!

My advice: Go inside, have a look at the wonderful tiles, buy som Pasteis and then go to the nearbye Gardens (either the ones in front of the nearby monument o the garden of Belém) and enjoy while relaxing for a moment and feeling the cool breeze coming from the see and the sun caresses your skin and soul.

Antiga Confeitaria de Belém is the only place in the world where you can find the real Pastéis de Belém because they’re made here and only here. Anything else would be a fake. That’s one of the reasons why there’s such a long queue outside the shop, though it flows quickly.
The other reasons is that a Pastel de Belém is made with an unbelievably delicious crème brulée-like filling inside a pastry basket that melts in your mouth. They come with icing sugar and cinnamon on the side so you can add them only if you like.

Go there if you are nearby and ask for the famous “Pasteis de Belém”, they are a different version of the “Pastel de Nata” that is said to come from a secret recipe and this place is the only one to have it. These pastry sweets are really delicious!

The only slight demotivating part is the huge line you may face to get in, but believe me it is worth it!
