strengthofabear: “Came here on New Years Day for Lunch with Ruiz and others, ended up staying till 11pm. Good jukebox. Helpful staff. Nice beer garden. Good location. Food was very average, standard pub stuff at best and not a lot of choice.” more...12 reviews of Priory Arms in English
Great pub, I must like it as I go there almost every Sunday. The selection of ales is very good, I always try any new ones. The Sunday lunch is very tastey, though I don’t have it every visit. I’ve uploaded a picture of the pub dog.
One of what London lacks - a really good neighbourhood boozer with bags of character. A no-nonsense lunch menu ( burgers or "tapas", although the latter would be quite alien to Madrid), a good selection of draught ales and lagers ( with a vast selection of bottled beers, tending toward the Belgian), helpful staff, and so forth.
Fantastic little pub that would be my ideal local if I lived anywhere nearby. The sort of place you come to for a pleasant drink and good conversation (or games), and if you really want, they'll put the football on for you.
I could imagine spending a lot of time here sampling all the ales I've never heard of, playing poker or trivial pursuit, then getting kicked out for starting a fight over the use of proper nouns in scrabble... maybe it's for the best that I live elsewhere.
Andrew Hunter Ha ha. Glad you liked the Priory. It's not my local, but i live about a mile away, so i'm in here quite a bit. You're quite right about proper nouns squabbling! Amazing to find such an erudite clientele in such a rough bit of town!

Quite simply a great pub. Especially surprising given the location....
Sounds good still. I used to be a regular in the 90s when I lived on Guildford road. The thing I always liked about the priory was the friendly mix-bus driver talks to barrister etc.
Youre so lucky to get some decent ale-there's not much of that over here in Asia. Ill definitely be popping in for a drink when I get back to London.
Andrew Hunter We'll look forward to seeing you. Yup, the Priory is still an absolute cracker (in my opinion it's actually got better over time). What's the real situation like in Asia then?

Wow, what a little gem! Tucked away around the back of Stockwell station, this is a real ale lover's paradise! And, as you all know, I am a real ale lover. There's around 5 on tap, with the stalwart of delicious summer lightening as a great foundation on which to try such gems as 'Deltic Diesel' - trainspotting and ale in one!
The food is also very good, and they do a poker night every Thursday. Good stuff.
So for months now (ever since the new functionality came in I guess), Qype has been recommending this pub to me as the number 1 place I have to see in London. So I have been meaning to come here for a while, but finally got round to making the trip recently.
And I recognized it immediately! Blow me if I hadn’t been here before! I recall having quite a conversation that was both deep and gossipy with a friend outside this pub…I estimate about 6/7 years ago!
I don’t really remember what it was like then, but it is a cracking pub now. OK it is a little bit on the pricey side for somewhere not in the centre of London, but it looks great (nice furniture, lovely plants and I really liked the Christmassy lights), has a cracking selection of real ales (I enjoyed a pint of naked ladies – I’m a sucker for a cool name!), the daily papers all lain out and a tasty looking menu. Add to this the tables outside and the fact it is fairly well hidden and off the main roads and you have another entry for my bulging ‘wish it was my local’ file.
So thank you qype! Time to see what my new top recommendation is. Wonder if I’ve been there before.
Andrew Hunter It’s a great pub. Try the Sunday roast! A few of us also play poker here on Thursday nights if you ever fancy joining us.

Happy Moose Drinker I actually noticed the poker league results when i was there. I am quite rubbish at all card games mind you!

Ooooh this one’s a good’un.
If two Qype captains insist that a pub is good, you can bet they’re right. But ooooh they’ve outdone themselves with this one.
It’s taken me several months to get here, after failed pub quizzes, failed trains and other misadventures, I found myself in here last week catching up with a friend. This is the perfect place to have a good gossip.
The bar staff are lovely, and didn’t seem to mind that we had a five minute conversation at the bar before ordering (as i said, we were catching up!) But there’s just a great vibe about the place. The rose was good, not great, but good enough for me to have two glasses. Think it was about £4.50 for a large glass so not too shabby.
I really want to come back and try the food here, but i was in Stockwell as my favourite Spanish restaurant is here. But this pub gets my five stars for being fabulous, friendly and apparently in support of the social smoker. They let you buy single smokes behind the bar. Brilliant.
Netty I like that, Siany: in support of the social smoker!!! Yeeah!!!!! This sounds like a really, really good place.

The Priory Arms is not far from were i use to work and i like to go back every 2 months. It is one of the best pubs in London, everyone is very nice and the food is top class i think. The Sunday Roast in the Priory Arms is out of this world, it’s so nice with the best beef. Just writing this makes me want to go there now. I can’t wait until time back there.
Good honest freehouse serving top quality cask marqued ales,
a great selection of draught lagers, Aspalls cider, Fruli and Wheatbeer. Extensive German, Belgian and continental bottled selection, served in cold glasses from the fridge.
Traditonal Sunday lunch from 1-6 p.m with a choice of rare topside, roast rib of beef, roast pork, chicken supreme, roast lamb, vegetarian roast, all served with seven portions of vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and gravy boat.
Monday to Friday food from 12.30-2.30 and 6.30-9.30
Saturday food from 12.30-9.30 specialising in burgers, hand cut sandwiches and home cooked daily main meals.
Trivia quiz on Sunday at 8.30
Sky TV in the main bar
Upstairs available for quieter times or private functions.

Andrew Hunter Need to come back for the Poker night soon! Will this run all the way through the summer?

A brilliant pub. Incredible food, plenty of decent beers (Summer Lightening especially) and the best pub quiz I’ve been to.
Would be good if they served food later on a Sunday and the small front garden suffers from lack of afternoon sun but one of the best pubs in the area.
Update
Went back on Sunday and had the most amazing roast lunch. Beautifully cooked chicken, mounds of vegetables and yorkshire pudding. The sticky toffee pudding was perfect too. The Priory Arms has just graduated to 5*s for me!

A very decent little pub off the beaten track in Stockwell. We went here for the quiz last night and had a brilliant time! Summer Lightening on tap and very friendly staff. The quiz questions were interesting and fun. I will now never forget “at which sporting event a british boxer peed in the corner of the ring”........ the answer is of course “Crufts”. Ho, Ho, Ho. Very clever.
What a shame they don’t serve the famous sunday roast after 6pm! We were all very excited about sampling the mouth watering menu but unfortunately the kitchen had closed.
I will definitely be coming back for the quiz soon and maybe lunch on Sunday.
Siany I’ve walked past this pub a few times but it never looks very inviting from the outside… maybe I’ll have to pop in next time I’m strolling by.

Linus Go in! Go in! Go in!...And ring me first so i can come as well. I used to live 200 yards away and I miss it so much!

This used to be my local and I really miss it as I've never found a pub that quite tops it for quality, comfort and downright loveliness. The people who own the Priory Arms pride themselves on serving good beer, they look after it well and source them from all over the world (there's always a good selection of guest beers on tap). There's also a brilliant selection of bottled beer for what is essentially a small, out of the way place.
What I'll miss most though is the food. The Priory's Sunday dinners have to be eaten to be believed. None of this 'gastropub £10 for a bit of beef balanced on a carrot' nonsense, at the Priory you get a huge plate of meat and yorkshire puddings (or a veggie option) plus a selection of veggies to choose from and...a gravy boat.
Being a northerner I am very particular about my gravy so I like to be in charge of how much I have and where on the plate it goes. The priory understands this and that makes me happy!
The owners also have the biggest dog I have ever encountered which is cool, but also quite scary if you've had one too many.
Linus That review was written almost two years ago so the dog isn't there anymore, but if you ask the guy who runs the place I'm sure he'll be happy to tell you about it.
