Hammersmith Underground station is one of the busiest stations on the London Underground network, and is situated slap bang in the centre of Hammersmith. The station incorporates a shopping centre and bus station, and handles nearly 28 million passengers a year.

Opened in 1874 as an extension of the Metropolitan District Railway from Earl's Court, it was extended to join the adjacent London & South Western Railway line to Richmond in 1877, and a branch was opened from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway in 1879. In 1906 it also became the terminus of an extension of the Piccadilly Line - then called the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway - a name recalled in some of the original art nouveau tiling, preserved above a modern mural at the main exit of the station. At this time, although the two lines shared a ticket office, they were effectively two separate stations.

The 1932 extension of the Piccadilly to Hounslow West saw a major rebuild of Hammersmith station, uniting both lines, with the two long island platforms to facilitate cross-platform interchange between them. The Piccadilly line was further extended to Heathrow in 1977, and to Terminal 4 in 1986.

The station was substantially rebuilt again in the 1990s. A large shopping centre and bus station was built above the tracks, new glass canopies erected on the platforms, new ticket halls opened at either end, and passenger lifts installed from the platforms, all completed in 1994. The station now offers step-free access from the street level to the platforms, as well as easy cross-platform interchange between the Piccadilly and District lines.

Piccadilly Line trains normally operate at 2-4 minute intervals in both directions. District Line trains eastbound to the City and Upminster operate at 4-5 minute intervals, and to Ealing Common and Richmond every 8-9 minutes. Intervals are longer in the early morning and late evenings.

The District/Piccadilly line station in Hammersmith is great. It is everything you want in a transport hub. It has frequently running trains (on the blue line mostly), information boards, visible staff, benches, kiosks and occasionally, sunshine.

It spills out into the Broadway centre, which is a shopping mall mostly inhabited by big name chain stores like Tesco, Orange, Carphone Warehouse and United Colours of Benetton.

It also adjoins the Broadway bus station which is the main bus station in Hammersmith and Fulham providing connecting services in all directions

Hammersmith Tube opens up to the wonderful shopping centre that is Hammersmith Broadway - it is an inside Oxford St, with every shop imaginable.

Accessorize, Boots, Ann Summers, Cards Galore, Preta, Scribbler, Starbucks, Subway, The Disney Store - and that's not the half of it!

Get there via the District and Piccadilly Lines, and the Hammersmith City Line is just across the road. Above the centre is a big indoors bus depot - very flash.

The only downfall is that I am so tempted to stop off from the bus to the train in one shop, and then another, and somehow end up having spent too much money on nothing much - ah the joys of shopping!
